Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Maeve Binchy Writers' Club
by

This was a spontaneous purchase for me, which doesn't happen often, and I couldn't have had a more wonderful experience. Maeve has such a relaxed style of writing. She shows you what it means to her to write a story, and inspires you to pick up the pen yourself, with dozens of noteworthy tips. I've read other books about writing, and they always indulge in the gory details of how hard it is to be a successful writer. After reading this one, I was refreshed, encouraged, and ready to take on the challenge. Thanks Maeve!

Long Way Round Chasing Shadows Across the World
by

This book will take you on an emotional adventure that's quite wonderful to discover. The authors really captured their own personal struggles throughout the journey, and allowed the reader inside their heads. But I left wanting more and I can't wait to read their next book.

The Road
by
Cormac McCarthy

, September 25, 2008
This is one of the most ghastly, beautiful books I have ever read. It felt like I was reading a piece of art. My breath was taken away by the way McCarthy peppered the long, grim columns of prose with moments of far-off hope and beauty. The book reads like an epic poem, and one that you will not soon forget. Every human should read this book.

This book is epic adventure on a spiritual scale. The writing is breathless and honest, and you will find many treasures if you dig deep.

Lonely Passion Of Judith Hearne
by
Brian Moore

, September 22, 2008
Brian Moore paints such a raw, intimate portrait of loneliness and the emptiness of blind faith. This book will tug at your heart and make you consider how you treat others around you. A beautiful, bittersweet book.

Where God Was Born A Journey by Land to the Roots of Religion
by
Bruce Feiler
a fellow seeker
, January 09, 2007
In the tradition of his earlier book, Walking The Bible, Feiler takes bold adventures into dangerous territories physically, but still doesn't have the strength to tell us what he really discovered there. It is well written, to be sure, but it lacks a personal decisiveness on his part that I was constantly craving. It made me want to know more about Bruce than about the Holy Land. In all, Where God Was Born is another enlightening chapter in Mr. Feiler's search for spiritual significance.
