Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Best Christmas Pageant Ever
by
Barbara Robinson

What happens to a small town Christmas pageant when the regular director breaks her leg? A family of six juvenile delinquent children hear that they can get free refreshments at the church and end up with all the lead roles because all of the other children are afraid of them? Imagine six children who know nothing of the Christmas story whose regular activities include smoking cigars, setting things on fire, stealing lunches and general bullying get cast as Mary, Joseph, wise men and angels. Despite, or maybe because of, their short comings it turns out to be the best Christmas pageant ever and gives us a different perspective on the Christmas story.

Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men
by

This book is an excellent read. I was amazed at how some of the quotes in the book are almost word for word things that I have said, thought or heard in my past relationship. Even if you are not in an emotionally abusive relationship I recommend this book just so that women can recogize the early warning signs. This book is so well organized and such an easy read that you can't help but pick up the information Lundy is giving out. She uses plain English for the every day gal so you don't have to have a Psychology degree yourself to understand it. This book was written for the emotionally and mentally abused woman. Ever since I read this book I have been telling all my friends and family about it. If you even suspect that someone might be in an emotionally abusive relationship I suggest you get this book for them. It is so hard to show your "emotional" bruises that you just feel like maybe you're losing your mind. This book helped to give me that final validation that I needed to get healthy again. The most profound statement that I found is early on in the book. "Half or more of physically abused women report that the emotional abuse is what is causing them the greatest harm."
