Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Squeeze "Nightmares and Dreamscapes", distill the juice, and you have Christine. This is Greased Lightening turned sinister, Hal made ambulatory, and Electric Dreams even more shocking. The car had ideas above its station; and to make them happen, it sucks out Arnies soul, morsel by morsel. Just as Arnie transforms from nerd to preppie to sociopath, so does Christine transform from a wreck to a sentient being with personality. Hell hath no 1958 Plymouth Fury like Christine.

Mating in Captivity Reconciling the Erotic the Domestic

Yes, right. Nappies and necking; bedroom and bedlam. This book is not about compromise, but about having what you want while wanting what you have, re-writing Marie Antoinette's fateful phrase as "let them eat their cake and have it". Nigh on twenty five years of marriage and three kids to show for it have taught me that no manual can teach you how to survive sleepless nights when a child is in hospital, or how to cope with a zillion measles itchy pimples. No switch can ignite your passion the moment everyone, except you two, is out of the territory. This book takes you to the fork in the road; your attitude to life, to love, and to sex, will influence your final decision. It's like the Ten Commandments, really; you know they're there for your own good... but whether you want to follow them or not is a moot point... Incidentally, I wonder how much of this book was written after assisuous follow-up of research that was done in the first place.
