Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Birds In Fall
by
Brad Kessler
bn
, February 20, 2007
In the aftermath of a plane crash off the Nova Scotia coast, the victims' next of kin congregate near the site to honor their dead and accept their incomprehensible loss. They find shelter at a B&B run by a gay couple who witnessed the crash and are doing what they can to help the mourners. While this may sound grim, the novel is truly beautiful in tone, sustained metaphor, compassion, and it is hopeful. The main characters are lovingly drawn with a wonderful eye for detail. The way survivors as well as B&B hosts deal with the grief and are changed by the events shows their collective grace & humanity. Into all this, Kessler has managed to weave a great amount of detail on seasonal bird migration. The ornithological detail forms a tale removed from but coexisting with our individualized suffering. Highly recommend it!

Wine Uncorked A Practical Introduction to Tasting & Enjoying Wine

I had no idea "jammy" and "minerally" qualified as words. If you relate to those terms in a book explaining the complex world of wine tastes, the book is probably just what you're looking for.
