Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Cutting for Stone
by
Abraham Verghese
sep
, August 05, 2012
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese was so eloquently written I did not want to take a break from reading for fear of abandoning the characters in the book. Verghese's descriptive and engaging narrative pulled me into the story so well I could close my eyes and believe I too was in the hospitals in Addis Ababa and New York City. Verghese's research and attention to detail are to be commended. Only once or twice did I find the detail tedious, but I must admit that was more-than-likely due to my impatience to know the outcome of the situation! I would recommend Cutting for Stone to anyone who wishes to be transported without effort to another time and place and to feel the pulse of a different city or even the thrills and trials of a dedicated surgeon's work.

Every parent and teacher (Pre-K through high school level) should be required to read this book. The research and real life experiences it presents are eye opening and heart warming. Reading aloud to a child benefits the child's ability to learn and helps develop a love of reading all the while a wonderful bond between the reader and the child is created and nurtured. Note to everyone: read aloud to children no matter what their age!!!
