Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Maida Heatters Book of Great Chocolate Desserts
by
Maida Heatter
Maggie the Cat
, August 14, 2006
Maida Heatter, revered in the culinary world, is the queen of delicious desserts! This book is chockfull of wonderful chocolate recipes, from the simple to the divinely extravagant. I'm always impressed with the results (and this coming from someone who doesn't consider herself a baker extraordinaire). I will take issue with one aspect, however: not enough photos. I do really appreciate having a visual aid to guide me (and to tantalize my tastebuds). But, that said, I still find Heatter's recipes an essential resource for my dessert adventures.

The House of Sleep
by
Jonathan Coe
Maggie the Cat
, July 26, 2006
Jonathan Coe is a marvel of strangeness and light. His sentences pervade and haunt. The driving force behind "House of Sleep" is Coe's incredible understanding of the human predicament and his unwavering concern for it. This is a beautiful story, and one that is merely the tip of the iceberg of a superb talent.
