Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Muck City Winning & Losing in Americas Last Football Town
by
Bryan Mealer

If you're interested in the history of the Southeast US, race relations, adolescence, despair and triumph, all through the lens of a high school football team, Muck City is a fantastic read. It compares to Drew Jubera's Must Win (Valdosta, GA high school football). Belle Glade, FL, the site of Muck City, is deeply embattled, its citizens often desperate, praying for players to make it out, then shaking their heads with a grim certainty when the stars fall back to earth. Both books are fascinating and revealing, pulling no punches in their dissections of communities, school systems, recruiting, and coaches. The players of Muck City, in meeting so many social and economic challenges, demonstrate courage every day. I highly recommend both books.

Sand Queen
by
Helen Benedict
Mendocino
, August 04, 2012
A sand queen is a skanky female soldier who "queens" it up over the women-starved men in her unit. This novel paints a more realistic and harrowing picture of the sometimes brutal relationship between men and women in the Army. Set in 2003 in Iraq, Sand Queen's soldiers range from rapists and thugs to sympathetic men who try to smooth the way for their female counterparts. The two main characters are a naive teen assigned to guard thousands of Iraqi prisoners and an Iraqi medical student whose father and brother are somewhere in those thousands. Characters make choices based on group pressure, fear, and despair; attempts to break out of a down-spiral are often countered by war's chaos and the rogue behavior of its actors, including our teen, who makes it home to a world she no longer inhabits. Beautifully written and imagined, this is a novel without sentiment that celebrates life as it describes events no one should endure.
