Working For The Devil Dante Valentine 1
by
Lilith Saintcrow
tami.kat
, May 01, 2007
For those who are frustrated by all the sex that has you annoyed at LKH and Anita Blake, you have to try this out! (I totally understand the whole ardeur and how all the sex relates so it doesn't annoy me.) She's kick-ass tough but can cry over the loss of a friend. Dante, "Danny" is a necromance in Saintcrow's Saint City with a tatoo that marks her as such allowing her to walk freely about with her katana. This is my first book in this world, from what I can tell her two previous books deal with psions and probably give more background in the world. This is a start of the "Dante Valentine" series and I'm looking forward to seeing how she does it. Very cool to find out that Lilith Saintcrow lives across the river in Vancouver, WA! I'm looking forward to one of her Dante Valentine book signings at Powell's.

Dog Sense Everything You Need To Know
by
Kathy Santo
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Kathy may have been doing dog training for 20+ years but she isn't staying current with what's happening in dog training. Sure she implies that she is using positive training because she's using food, but she's also telling people how to correctly leash pop their dog. Even with the food training she's using 'okay' as a release word which means that anytime that your dog hears this word in a conversation around it, it is ok for it to break from whatever behavior it was currently doing. If you want a New Jersey dog trainer check out Pamela Dennison and her great books - The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training, How to Right a Dog Gone Wrong, Bringing Light to Shadow: A Dog Trainer's Diary. I would also highly recommend Pat Miller's Positive Perspectives: Love Your Dog, Train Your Dog, or The Power of Positive Dog Training.

Canine Body Language A Photographic Guide Interpreting the Native Language of the Domestic Dog
by
Brenda Aloff
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Turid Rugaas gave us "On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals" how dogs communicate with each other and with us. Brenda used 1000s of photos to give us lots of examples of these calming signals along with explanations of them. The editing could have been better, but if you overlook this small flaw, it's a book well worth the money and should be on every dog trainer's bookshelf after well reading it. Owner's interested in learning how their dog communicates should have this book too! My positive dog book group through YahooGroups - CSDogBookReview enjoyed Brenda's short visit with us in March 2006!

Raising Puppies & Kids Together A Guide for Parents
by
Pia Silvani
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
If you were thinking of adding a puppy to your household because you have kids in the house, get this book! It could save you from making a mistake about getting a puppy, possibly saving its life. Pia and Lynn cover choosing a breed that fits your household, why you shouldn't get a puppy to teach the kids responsibility, what it's like having a puppy in the house, and how you'll have to always keep an eye on the puppy and kids whenever they are together. Buy this book if you're a parent thinking about getting a puppy for your kids. Buy this book if a friend has kids and is thinking of getting a puppy. Buy this book if you *think* you might have kids in the future and want to prepare your dog(s) for their arrival.

On Talking Terms with Dogs Calming Signals
by
Turid Rugaas
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
The first edition was revolutionary but the 2nd takes it to a whole new level. This booklet has been totally revamped. More Calming Signals are explained/explored and with full color photos too. This is a must have for every dog owner and at a great affordable price. Dog trainers should be handing these out to their clients so that more people can understand what their dogs are communicating with them and other dogs. So even if you already have a copy of the first edition, you're going to want this one too! It's better! It will be great to 'talk' with Turid about this new edition when she joined us for another one of her whirlwind visits at YahooGroup CSDogBookReview April 18-21, 2006. She'll be back December 2007 for a full week, if you missed her last visit. If you thought you'd like Brenda Aloff's Canine Body Language but the $39 price tag was scaring you, get this booklet!

My Dog Pulls What Do I Do
by
Turid Rugaas
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
What is really cool is that Turid uses scientific data to back up her work here. Many have had issue with the lack of scientific data with her Calming Signals work and I think she includes it here well. I reviewed the booklet as part of her upcoming visit, April 18-21st (2006) at CSDogBookReview (a YahooGroup) along with her 2nd Edition version of On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals booklet/DVD. We always love having Turid as a guest because we learn so much from her in the short amount of time she can give us in her busy schedule. It's wonderful that we have had her as a guest each year we've been in exsistence as a group and that she loves coming back! Neither of my dogs currently have a pulling issue so I wasn't able to really practice Turid's methods. I think adding in the work to have a unique sound before actually going outside to work on loose leash walking will really help a lot of people that are frustrated with the standard 'make like a tree' that is often suggested. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I think Turid, or possibly her UK editor who helped with the translation from Norwegian, got a little heavy handed in telling the readers that various equipment is bad to use. Yes, as a positive dog trainer I'm not happy seeing a dog in a prong, choke, slip collars but there are less heavy handed ways of stating than what was used. The bonus is the lovely full color photos and the use of color throughout the booklet. If this is a dog issue you are working on, this booklet should help you!

Puppy Training
by
Charlotte Schwartz
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Charlotte Schwartz still believes that if you let a dog go out the door before you, eat before you or allowed up on the furniture, muchless sleep with you that it will take over ruling the household. Dogs totally understand who controls the food - the ones with the opposable thumbs. If you ask for a few simple things like a sit before being fed who cares who ate before whom? You give up many of the pleasures there are in enjoying the companionship of your puppy/dog if you follow Charlotte's advice to not allow them up on the furniture or up on your bed. There are better puppy training books out there like Pat Miller's books - The Power of Positive Dog Training and Positive Perspectives: Love Your Dog, Train Your Dog. Much better training books for your dollars to spend on!

Shadows In The Starlight
by
Elaine Cunningham
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Gwen's dealing with the new knowledge that she's of the Elder Race and trying to learn as she goes along. A new friend is killed, a new friend brings her into his family, another new friend isn't what he seems to be. Ian shows her what an elven oath means and takes away her ability to eat french fries. Elves can be cruel. ;^) So if someone asks you to swear a oath "by moon and star, wind and word" beware what you say. Hopefully in the third book we'll learn more about the 'Qualities' that the Elder Race have. Better yet that this isn't just a trilogy but the making of a series. For those of you uptight about sex - Gwen does have sex - once. Nothing like the Anita Blake sex scenes so shouldn't be any compliants.

Right on Target: Taking Dog Training to a New Level
by
Mandy Book and Cheryl S. Smith
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful: Step-By-Step Instructions!, May 3, 2006 I love training books, but I love them more if they tell me step-by-step how to train a behavior! Even better, how to then expand on a basic behavior to make it more complex. There's instructions on teaching behaviors that will help in canine sports - agility, flyball (paw touch on a contact similar to agility for learning a box turn) and freestyle. There's also fun stuff like teaching your dog to skateboard, hug, crawl, bow, kiss, etc. I'm also curious to try out the loose leash walking by targeting the leash - not for competition behavior, but nice for companion walking. We had an awesome visit at CSDogBookReview (YahooGroups) in April 2006 with Mandy and Cheryl - check out our archives!

Training the Disaster Search Dog: A Dogwise Training Manual
by
Shirley M. Hammond
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Shirley is upfront on what it takes to become a Disaster Search team. The team is the dog and handler and while the dog may have the skills the handler also has to be prepared to handle the disaster scene. Shirley explains how agility skills can be translated into helping your dog become a Disaster Search Dog as part of her training triangle. Shirley also comprehensively lays out training goals and plans and how to implement them with your dog to make you successful in this new training. The Appendix information is helpful for determining if your dog would be successful as a Disaster Search Dog or if your puppy would be. There's also useful instructions on how to build your own training equipment. The book uses photographs and diagrams to explain concepts to further learning. Shirley was a guest author at CSDogBookReview in August 2006 and we really enjoyed her visit!

by
Carolyn A. Krause
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Want to do something with your puppy or dog that makes use of their natural talent? You'll want to do tracking and Carolyn has made it easy for you to try it out! She tells you what you'll need for equipment, how to draw a track diagram, and how to keep a diary and why. She addresses when to start with your puppy and how your pup can have a title before it's a year old. Don't have a puppy but still want to try? No problem she covers that too! Get hooked on tracking! Carolyn was a guest member in February 2006 on CSDogBookReview (YahooGroups). After reading her book and listening to her discusions I've started tracking with my two four year old dogs. They're loving it! Thanks Carolyn!

Shock to the System The Facts about Animal Vaccination Pet Food & How to Keep Your Pets Healthy
by
Catherin Odriscoll
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Catherine goes into details with research from vets on the effects of vaccinations on our pets. Do they need annual vaccinations or are they causing our pets to become ill? Are vaccinations a moneymaker? Yes, pets should be examined yearly to insure good health, but vaccinations should not be the reason for this yearly health check. Catherine also encourages the reader to do more research on their own. Catherine talks about food and stress and their effect on your animal's health. Catherine used to feed exclusively a raw diet, but has since modified that stance to allow that it can be too much 'energy' for some animals and that a cooked or prepared diet may be more appropriate. Rare for those who have made the conversion to admit that it may not be the 'best' for all dogs. Shock to the System will make you think - not a bad thing! We had a great visit with Catherine at CSDogBookReview May 2006.

Shadows In The Darkness
by
Elaine Cunningham
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Gwen - GiGi is her vice cop alter identity - doesn't know that she's a Changeling she's always just looked really young - teenaged to her real age in the early 30s. What she does know is that sometimes she can 'see' things touched by others or pick up things being in their personal space. Gwen has been forced off of the police force because her boss conveniently lost paperwork that proved she was undercover - when two of her co-workers were killed in the line of duty. Now she's a private investigator in search of a missing teenager. We find out how that case turns out to be linked to her own previously unknown identity as a member of the Elder Race and one that has an ability that is pretty special. There's sex, but not graphic like the current Anita Blake. Gwen has some of the same kick ass characteristics that we fell in love with in Anita without all the hang-ups or ardeur. This should be a fun series! I'll have to check out others from this author.

Dr Pitcairns Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats
by
Richard H Pitcairn
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
I'd reviewed the 2nd edition version when I was looking into a more natural diet for my puppies on the advice of my holistic vet. In fact I was using the diet until my youngest started gaining weight and they were worried that the grains were causing the weight gain. I switched to raw meat and pureed veggies instead. Turns out that she was low thyroid. The diets are still heavy on grains. Great for the majority of dogs I'm sure. The upside is that there are nutritional analysis of all the diets included so you know why you're including each of the components. There are also special diets included for allergies, weight loss and gain. I also like the information on various health issues and vaccinosis that is included.

Wolf Who Rules Tinker 2
by
Wen Spencer
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
This could be a standalone book but you'll enjoy it more if you've read "Tinker". We get more of a background on Elvish culture and their clan structure. Sure Tooloo shared her point of view with Tinker but she never tells the truth. Windwolf gives a more balanced view of what happened with the Skin Clan and how the domana and the sekasha came to be. Windwolf also gets to do some time as the main character and we get to 'hear' what he is thinking. Tinker does some growing up in the short time that we're with her in this book. Space of about nine days with lots of action thrown in. She learns that her actions can have very negative consequences on those around her when she inadvertently causes the death of a former friend. There's more on the tengu in this book as well. It really would be cool to be able to fly as they do. Tinker also agrees to have them be 'beholden' to her without understanding the full scope of how many there are of the tengu. This doesn't feel like the end of a series but a nice further foundation laying of a new world to enjoy. I'll be checking Wen's LiveJournal to hopefully learn more about the next book - Endless Blue that may be the third in this series.

Stress in Dogs Learn How Dogs Show Stress & What You Can Do to Help
by
Martin Scholz
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
Wow! Turid Rugaas has been talking about stress in dogs for the last couple of years during her visits with us at CSDogBookReview. Not surprising she is mentioned in this book. Each person, as well as, each dog handles stress differently. Learn to recognize the difference between the 'good' stress - eustress and the 'bad' stress - distress. Does your dog have lots of medical conditions - like allergies, diarrhea, and many others? Then your dog might be showing signs of stress. Have you ever taken your dog to a dog event or the vet and made sure they eliminated before you went inside? Then shortly after entering your dog defecates? That's stress! This is a must have book for all dog owners who compete in sports with their dogs. Figure out if you're stressing your dog. Then decide how to handle it from there. If your dog has developed some medical issues and you can figure out why, find out if they might also be stress related. I have a house guarder that likes to bark at things out the window. He also has chronic ear infections and skin allergies. I'm thinking that stress and constant release of cortisol is playing into these issues and will be discussing it with his vet. I'm also looking forward to having Martina and Clarissa as guest authors in May 2007 at CSDogBookReview, a YahooGroup.

Visiting the Dog Park: Having Fun, Staying Safe: A Dogwise Training Manual
by
Cheryl S. Smith
tami.kat
, April 26, 2007
If you finally have a dog park coming near you and you want to take your dog(s) to the park for some off leash fun, get this book to prepare beforehand. Cheryl covers what to look for in a good dog park - rules, park etiquette (yours and your dog), openings, landscaping and clean-up. Cheryl also covers different personality types in dogs and which dog may want to stay home rather than go to the park. There's also a very cool section of scenarios to see if you can tell what is going on in different dog interactions. Don't worry if you don't get them all right, it takes practice reading dog body language. There's a whole chapter that acts as a checklist for those who enjoy making sure they have all the details to prepare for a good experience with their dog. What to wear - you and your dog. How to arrive and enter as well as exit the park. What to do while in the park. Cheryl also covers health issues that may come up from visiting a dog park. The various illnesses that can come from shared water bowls, airborne illnesses, and poop-borne illnesses. These aren't meant to scare you from going! The last chapter has suggested resources for training behaviors as well as how to learn canine body language. There is a lot of resources for dog park rules, how to find one, and how to get one setup in your area.
