Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Sierra Club Guide To Sketching In Nature
by
Cathy Johnson
James
, January 09, 2015
I haven't found anything by Cathy Johnson I didn't love. However I felt I needed to comment on this book because it is so special. I paint outdoors, mostly in the mountains near here. This book explains so many things and is beautifully illustrated. It sounds cliche to say both beginners and experts will enjoy this book, but in this case it is true. I have been painting for quite a few years, but I have learned a lot from this little treasure. I am always pleasantly surprised when I look back through it for inspiration. She starts with chapters on tools and equipment and then tips on getting started: simplifying things, hints on procedures and making expressive and impressive sketches. She covers the basic rules of course, but what I like most is her great tips on field sketching. Can't say enough. Inspiring and 228 pages of valuable information.

Complete Walker IV
by
Colin Fletcher

I found this book to be a complete "how-to" book, but also much more. The philosophical arguments are inspiring. You can find all you need to know about equipment on-line, but you will never find anything that approaches the enjoyable, comfortable style of writing in this little tome. Great insights into "why" as well as the "what" and the "how."

Social Intelligence The New Science of Human Relationships
by
Daniel Goleman
James
, July 09, 2010
I found this book interesting reading and in many ways helpful. However be aware that this is what I would call "popular psychology" genre, not rigorous science. For a book on pop psychology I think it is well done. It is always interesting to read the case studies and reports on human behavior. The thesis seems to be that we now understand more about how our brain processes social situations and this somehow helps us understand social connections and how to improve or at least manage them. I'm not convinced that has been shown. Nor do I think Goleman adheres to the accepted definition of social intelligence as it was originally intended. That being said, Goleman writes well and the book is popular. I'm not surprised that it received a positive review from "O"--The Oprah Magazine.

Medicine for Mountaineering & Other Wilderness Activities
by
James A. Wilkerson
James
, April 08, 2008
I looked at quite a few books on this subject at the local library and found this one to be the most comprehensive. It is readable for a lay person and thorough enough for someone with my training (EMT). It has 366 pages of fine print and is written by a team of 12 doctors, all experts in their respective fields. It is well organized and has adequate illustrations, charts and graphs. There are 25 topic chapters. Five appendixes: Medications, Therapeutic Procedures, Medical Supplies, Legal and Ethical Considerations, and Glossary. Unlike some first aid books claiming to be for the outdoors, this one has excellent application to the wilderness situation.

ARRL General Class License Manual 5th Edition
by
ARRL
James
, September 13, 2006
For someone studying for the General Class Amature Radio licence this is the perfect manual. And, in addition, it has some very good advice on setting up a radio station. It does include the current (400?) question pool for the Element 3 exam. Overall, I found it much better than previous licence manuals put out by ARRL. It is more "user friendly" and it is well organized. There is a glossory in the back along with conversion tables. The book is full of illustrations, diagrams and tables. Well worth the price.
