Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Into the Raging Sea: Thirty-Three Mariners, One Megastorm, and the Sinking of El Faro
by
Rachel Slade
Jean MacDonald
, May 27, 2018
I have been fascinated with shipwrecks ever since I read the Titanic article in the "T" volume of World Book as a kid. And growing up in Florida, hurricanes have played a role in my life since my earliest memories. When I read that the El Faro's "black box" provided a transcript of what happened on this ship during Hurrican Joaquin, I knew I would have to read this book. It's well-researched, and devotes half of the narrative to the history of modern maritime shipping. The crew had its foibles, and the captain made questionable choices, but the author looks at the larger picture of commercial shipping, and the TOTE corporation in particular. The sad fact is that profits will come before people in these scenarios.

A Guinea Pig Romeo and Juliet
by
William Shakespeare, Tess Gammell and Alex Goodwin

Another fantastic entry in the Guinea Pig Classic series. So much cuteness in a small package. I appreciate that these abridged versions in this series stick to the text and the story of the original. My favorite is stil A Guinea Pig Pride and Prejudice, probably because it has a happy ending, which Romeo and Juliet does not have. The sadness is somewhat abated by seeing our guinea pig Romeo and Juliet dressed as angels in heaven, though. :-)

Girls Like Us Carole King Joni Mitchell Carly Simon & the Journey of a Generation

I listened to these artists more than anyone else during my formative years. I always suspected that had a big impact on my worldview (especially when it comes to men!), and reading this book helped me understand how. Despite being overlong and in need of a good copyeditor, this book will fascinate any woman born during the baby boom. And any man who wonders where we got some of our ideas...

Blonde Faith Easy Rawlins

This tenth outing for Easy Rawlins will certainly please fans of the series. It's one of the best. The great supporting characters are all there (Mouse, Jackson Blue, Jesus, Bonnie, Feather) and interesting new ones are woven in to this tale of longing and redemption. Walter Mosley is a genius.

Waters Lovely
by
Ruth Rendell

This is a classic Ruth Rendell tale. She is a connoisseur of the banality of evil and has deft hand with a wide-ranging cast of characters. Each one is in some sense the villain of the piece, and Rendell keeps us guessing until the end.

An amazing book. The story has haunted me ever since I finished it. The characters are beautifully drawn and the tale is a fascinating one, timeless despite its near future setting.
