Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

James Hewitt

, January 22, 2008
This is one of the best yoga books out there! It's a total bargain for anyone who wants a combination of theory and practice. It's full of tons of poses and helpful drawings as well as a large, fascinating section of theory.

Maus II a Survivors Tale & Here My Troubles Began
by
Art Spiegelman
venusinfauxfurz
, January 22, 2008
A beautiful and profound work of art. Spiegelman struggles not only with his guilt for living a life much less challenging than his father's, a Holocaust survivor, but also, in this second book, with how he deals with becoming a commercial success through his father's suffering.

Simply a beautiful story. It grabs you on the first line and lets you down easily on the last.

Hotel New Hampshire
by
John Irving
venusinfauxfurz
, May 04, 2007
This book is highly underrated and unrecognized and gets skipped over way too often in favor of some of Irving's more popular novels. This is not a book any Irving fan should miss. The book is full of the usual Irving charm, plus the roles and relationships that arise between siblings and a bear riding in a motorcycle sidecar.

Handling Sin
by
Michael Malone
venusinfauxfurz
, May 04, 2007
I bought this book yesterday and haven't been able to put it down. I have never seen anyone reading or buying one of Michael Malone's books and I've never seen one on anyone's bookshelves, although I have noticed that they are always on the shelf at the bookstore. They're published by a small publishing company and their covers are very nice and eye-catching. Anyway. I pulled this off the shelf yesterday because I was looking for something, anything to do rather than work on a take-home sociology final on issues in feminism. I read the plot synopsis and was amused. I took it upstairs, read the first two chapters, and remained amused. Twenty-four hours later, I'm done with finals and still engrossed in this book. Michael Malone is solid! Why isn't everyone reading him?!

This book is worth every penny. There are more perfect sentences in this book than anything else that's been published lately.

What is the What
by
Eggers, Dave
venusinfauxfurz
, April 23, 2007
This is not your typical Eggers novel. It's more human than A Heart-Breaking Work of Staggering Genius and more profound than You Shall Know Our Velocity. Yes, Deng's story has been fictionalized, but it's also been given the potential to reach thousands of readers and alert them to the reality of his life.

Digressions on Some Poems by Frank OHara A Memoir

Absolutely necessary for any fan of Frank O'Hara's poetry. It sets the scene for the Collected Poems and humanizes the poet in an incredibly personal way.

A great book if you're looking for a place to start with WWII fiction or Norman Mailer's oeuvre.

Second Sex
by
Simone de Beauvoir
venusinfauxfurz
, April 23, 2007
The best English translation available, although there are a few rough patches and is actually an abriged version of the original French text. Translation issues aside, it's a good edition of a very important book.

My Neighbor Totoro

Hayao Miyazaki

I tend to find that this is one of Miyazaki's most underrated films. If you're a fan of Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, you should watch this at least once.

Wonder Boys

Michael Chabon

I'm an avid reader of everything from Ibsen to Pynchon and this is the book I have reread most often. It's a masterpiece of modern fiction. The characters remain with you long after your first reading.
