Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)

Preface: I don't usually read books - I listen to them. So it was unusual that I read this at all, since my local public library didn't have a copy of the audio version. It turned out to be well worth my while - a compilation of seemingly unrelated vignettes that start to veer closer and closer. It is not at all character or plot-driven, but there is this thread of connection and theme that pulls it all together that I almost didn't even see until I came to the last page with a big WOW. Subtle and surprising, brilliantly shaped.

Help

Part mystery, part historical fiction, I was drawn through this book and the issues of racism it confronted and reminded of how easy it is to ignore those we consider "less than" in this world. In that era it was "The Help" and in this one it is immigrants from Mexico and Central America. We allow them to do our dirty work and yet do not acknowledge their equality as human beings. Compelling and uncomfortable topics.
