Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Terror
by

Simmons' "The Terror" will immerse you in the world of arctic exploration. I'm not typically a reader of thrillers but I couldn't put this book down. The historical details (and the knowledge that the book is based on a series of true events) made the story even more chilling, and I was heartbroken when I finished it (in three days!). The characters were numerous, but each one was well-developed and tragically human. I wasn't taken with the ending, and found the last 200 pages or so to be out of tone with the rest of the book, but overall, I can't stop raving about it!

Lizzie Siddal: Face of the Pre-Ra
by
Lucinda Hawksley

Slim but satisfying, this biography charts the heartbreaking life of one of art's most familiar faces: Lizzie Siddal. Hawksley is sympathetic toward Siddal and counters some of the common myths and legends surrounding her. Those who are familiar with her life might not discover anything new, but for readers who are curious about the woman in Millais' "Ophelia" or Rossetti's "Beata Beatrix", this book will have you seeing those paintings in a new light.
