Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Help Movie Tie In

I have to say that with all the 'hype' surrounding this book, I was not expecting it to live up to the 'hype'. Was I ever wrong! This is a wonderful novel, full of richly drawn characters that you just wish you could sit down, spend some time with and become friends with. This is a novel that actually has a message within it, that being that we are all equal, reguardless of what we do for a living or what color our skin is. There are certainly some very 'ugly' scenes here, ones that show just what life was like 'back then' and to offset those there are some wonderfully touching moments, moments of love shared between 'the help' and one of her charges, moments when two people come to the realization that they are more alike than previously thought even though their individual 'stations' in life are far apart, and moments of redemption. This book also touches upon the changes that were beginning to happen in the South with the Equal Rights Movement and how it was affecting those who lived down there. Upon a first reading it may seem that this is a somewhat 'light' novel, one without much substance to it, but further readings will prove that to be false. This is a richly written novel with much substance and richly drawn characters inhabiting its pages! The best thing I can say about this book is I didn't want it to end! The second best thing I want to say about this book is I want to read a sequel!!

Full Dark No Stars
by
Stephen King

Stephen King hits the ball out of the park with this collection of novellas. These stories harken back to his early days when there was a certain 'drive' in his writing, that 'drive' being to get the story told quickly and told well. King is able to bring to life his characters in a few short paragraphs, sometimes in just a few lines. Each of these four stories is dark, some are quite dark and bloody even, but each of them packs a wallop. There are no supernatural monsters here, no alien beings, no vampires or werewolves, but each story has its human equivalent of a monster. Each story shows us the dark side of human nature and the price one has to pay for unleashing it. I have been reading King since the late 1970's and have read every one of his books or stories and even though there have been a few 'clunkers' here and there, Full Dark, No Stars is definately not one of them. I highly recommend this book to anyone and especially to any of those readers who have not read any recent King books. You won't be disappointed.
