Confessions Of A Starving Artist the Art & Life of Harley Brown
by

This is an amazing book not only for the beautiful pages of Harley Brown's art, but also because of the stories he has to tell about his struggles to become the artist he is today. I don't know why this book is still out of print, as I'm sure there are many people who would love to read it and give as a gift if it were not for the fact that it is so scarce. One of my favorite stories Harley writes about is when he was hired to by a married woman to paint her nude when the husband did not know. The book is filled with mesmerizing art by Harley Brown, from American Indians to Marilyn Monroe. I hope they reprint this book again soon so those who are not familiar with Harley's life and work and great sense of humor can get to know him.

Lullabies To Dreamland
by
Deniece Williams

This is a beautiful book for both the poems and thoughts as well as the beautiful illustrations. It is written by Deniece Williams, who has won several Grammies and had at least 8 top-40 albums along with at least 3 #1 Top Ten hits. She has 4 children of her own. There is a poem on one page and opposite that page is a little paragraph lesson for parents about God's love for children, ended by a beautiful Bible verse, such as "I have loved you with an everlasting love." (Jeremiah 31:3) I love this book for it's gentleness and beautiful quiet words that focus on what is most important in our lives--our love for others and God's love for us and our children. The illustrations leave you with a sense of wonderment and peace.

This book has some amazingly beautiful and vividly colorful illustrations. I collect children's picture books, and find this one to be special. It's simple to read to your child, and the message is wonderful. There is a lot going on in each picture. The message is simple.

Flower Painters Essential Handbook
by
Jill Bays

, January 22, 2008
This is an excellent book to learn watercolor flower painting with, and I love the loose, relaxed style of the 50 flowers you will learn to draw and paint. It is different from some other watercolor books I already own, and fills a nice gap in learning to vary painting styles. I really like it for it's simplicity and loose relaxing style, while at the same time, presenting about 50 different types of flowers to paint in a step-by-step fashion. It's a great book. It has drawing instructions for each flower, pointing out the details and things such as a folded or twisted petal, and how the bud attaches to the stem. Arrows explaining where the light and shadows fall and how to paint that are easy to follow. The palette for each painting is between 3 to 6 colors, which I also found nice. The washes and layering are also taught in an easy to follow manner. The book is almost completely devoted to 50 two-page exercises on painting 50 different flowers from letter A to W, and does not spend much time on presenting such things as color theory. I really like this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn and practice flowers in watercolors.

Blackberry Ink

This book is fun to read. Most of the poems are silly and they rhyme. The illustrations are great also. If you like Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, this book somehow reminded me a little of both of them--very creative and just plain FUN!!

John Pike Paints Watercolors
by
John Pike
paints a lot
, January 22, 2008
This is one of the most beautiful watercolor books I have. John Pike has a wonderful way of simplifying the complex--both in his paintings and also in the words he chooses to explain about his life as an artist and his working methods for the beautiful artwork in his book. There are 13 demonstrations and then a gallery of his paintings along with explanations of how he approached the painting. There is also an interview with John Pike at the beginning of the book. The demonstrations are entrancing, and Pike does not hold any "secrets" back from the students. It is as if John Pike is standing beside you explaining to you step-by-step how to paint his painting. The paintings are loose, with lots of light and contrast. It's a wonderful book that ever watercolor student should hold on to.

Watercolor in Bloom Painting the Spring & Summer Garden
by
Mary Backer
paints a lot
, January 22, 2008
I have a lot of watercolor flower painting books, but the style of flower painting in this one by Mary Backer is unique from my other books in that the style is almost surreal, with vivid colors of both the flowers and background accentuated. There are 15 beautiful and well-written and illustrated demonstrations with step-by-step instructions. The beginning chapters explain a lot about The Basics such as tools, composition & design, techniques, color basics. I love the vivid colorfulness of both the flowers and the backgrounds of Mary Backer's flowers. This book is a keeper

Harry Potter 07 & The Deathly Hallows
by
J K Rowling
paints a lot
, May 12, 2007
It's sad that this will be the last of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, but perhaps she has other ideas for other writings that will be just as fabulous. I'm not sure if I like the fact that her books have gotten quite so dark and less for children. I wish they weren't quite so dark, but I am still looking forward to this book.
