Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

La Dolce Vita Sweet Things from the Italian Home Kitchen

This book is so beautiful! It offers authentic rustic Italian dessert recipes with gorgeous, lush photos. The photos of the cheesecakes are drizzled with ripe fruits and berries, (though I wish she mentioned what berries and fruits are used on top) the cakes are unique with an almost exotic edge to them and there is definitely an old world authentic feel to all of them. I especially love the orange tart and cheesecakes, but you should get it for the pictures alone. The instructions are easy enogh to follow. A very hedonistic book.

Caprials Desserts

I am always a little apprehensive about celebrity cookbooks, books on baking and pastry, but this has amazing recipes that work. The pie crust recipes are especially great because they call for butter and shortening, resulting in a tender and flaky crust that tastes great, unlike butter only recipes. The coconut cream cake and german chocolate cake are very moist and decadent. The only major problem is the lack of photos. They do have some, but I wish they had more. I will NEVER understand or agree with cookbooks that are put out and do not contain photos for the majority of the recipes. I would like to know what the end product will and should remotely look like. Also, I have tried more tender, chewy cookie recipes. However, aside from the cookie recipes these are such decadent, yet simple (even the more labor intensive ones are easy to follow) desserts that are well structured and reliable that I highly recommend this book.
