Brief History of Thought A Philosophical Guide to Living
by
Luc Ferry

In the midst of these on-going campaign histrionics, it was an enormous pleasure, with a calming effect, to be entertained educated and enlightened -- three aspects of the best theatre so like an evening with a wonderful friend-- by an author in Luc Ferry who respects the Reader, and wants to genuinely communicate, drawing us into the conversation. Philosophy has been, for me, a cornerstone in reading fiction and non-fiction all my life; the rather recent development of the field called Psychology of Literature has given how I've always regarded fiction reading a shape in which I can relate to what others are contemplating. A Brief History of Thought: A Philosophical Guide to Living is wonderful in that there is no dissembling, no conspiring to be obtuse, no ridiculous lies and prejudices presented as truth that you must swallow or be considered stupid, unpatriotic, amoral. The totally haphazard language of politics connecting arbitrary soundbites into supposedly meaningful whole thoughts gets shown up grandly by the plain-speaking of Ferry about the most complex and profound matters: how we can make life make sense. I hope everyone reads this book. It helps you understand even what you think you already understood.

Cutting for Stone

Not since The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini have I read a book of this particular range and eloquence lately. It is wonderful to be introduced to such a lyrical yet precise writer. I learned a good deal effortlessly; more importantly the feelings aroused within the family circle were profound and not readily answered -- the reader has room to become involved thereby examining ones own life choices. I'd recommend this work to anyone.
