Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Elsies Endless Wait Book One

It's hard to rate a book I first read as a young girl, but I want to because so many have never heard of Elsie these days. My great grandmother owned the series, and it was passed down through generations. I first read the Elsie Dinsmore series around age seven or eight, when I was Elsie's age. I loved the books, the fact that this was a little girl not living in an artificially concocted world like many kids books do where there are no real problem. Strangely enough, the "god stuff" in the book didn't derail me. I read everything I could get my hands on, and it never made me 'feel close to god' (shudder) or want to go out and join a church. These books are precious to me.

The World Without Us

Just finished this (bought used from Powell's - real books are the way, man!!!!) and loved it. Not a 'treehugger' book, rather a really excellent anthropological look at our society and how the earth would make up for what we've done to it if we were suddenly gone. I loved the historical aspects to this book - I learned so much about how the earth was before humans migrated to different areas and how our activities changed, literally, the landscape of the earth and our footprint on it, and so much damage that we've done that will take millions of years to undo. Great work.
