Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. This is the best book I read in 2012. It's a brilliant novel that envelopes you. I wanted to start it again as soon as I finished it.

Age of Miracles

I loved this book. The combination coming of age story and terrifying sci fi premise blended so seamlessly, it's hard to categorize this book. The story, the characters, everything about this book seemed to be handled with such care that I was in awe on every page.

This was my favorite book of 2011. I recommend it to readers of all kinds. The setting and characters were so vividly drawn I felt I could easily step through the pages of this book. The Major is one of the best characters I've met in a long time.

Divergent 01
by
Roth, Veronica

As far as Young Adult Dystopian society series go, Divergent is in the middle of the pack. There are many interesting themes in this book that are poorly served by inadequate world building and shallow, uneven character development. For mindless entertainment, you won't be disappointed - although it's worth mentioning there are moments of sadistic, senseless violence that may be disturbing to younger readers. I really, really wanted to love this book - overall, I feel like it was a missed opportunity.

Shades of Grey

Jasper Fforde's writing defies any one genre and the result is brilliant. I so enjoyed this journey through a world where color means everything and I can't wait for the next one. I was a fan of the Thursday Next series, but I love this one more!

The Hunger Games: Hunger Games 1
by
Suzanne Collins

I could not tear myself away from this book. I read it on a cross country plane trip during which I'm usually counting the minutes until landing. However, with this book my uncomfortable surroundings disappeared and I didn't want to move until I was finished. I greatly enjoy young adult fiction and this is one of the finest novels I've ever read. It should be on required reading lists everywhere.

I enjoyed the ride of this book more for the travel aspect than the personal discovery. The bits of happiness research and the comparisons of each different culture were very educational and entertaining.

Rick Steves' travel books should be required reading for any traveler. We didn't need anything but this wonderful book to get around and fully explore Provence and the French Riviera.

This book was our bible during our honeymoon. Every restaurant recommendation was spot on, directions are super detailed and the self guided tours are so informative AND save you money. After our experience with this book, we won't travel without Rick Steves.
