Stop what you are doing. Right now. And purchase this book. It's crazy good. It has the wacky feel of Daniel Pinkwater and the lowbrow cool of rockabilly. In fact, it might just be the coolest, most badass kids book ever made. The story is a wacky, out space fable illustrated by newcomer, Raul the Third who manages to express the perfect retro vibe with very few colors. It's beautiful, funny, a bit camp, educational and diverse. What are you still doing here? Go now, before all the grownups buy up all the copies.

This book is a beautiful meditation on loneliness. Each character carries a loneliness with them that in some cases is debilitating. I was really quite moved by this book. It was not over written which is a danger when covering big topics like grief, love, loneliness, loss. And yet, for portraying two characters who are vastly different struggling with such an emptiness in their lives, the author has given us a believable measure of hope. Even Arthur, 500+ pounds and stuck in his house by choice, experiencing a depth of loneliness most people never even get near, is not a pathetic character. He is a lovely man quite alone but still willing to reach out and grab onto a buoy. I loved it.

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving
by
Jonathan Evison

I loved this book. Benjamin is the pathetic main character unable to stay afloat after losing his wife and daughter. Despite the gloomy future for himself that he envisions, he still manages to continue on. In an effort to make any sort of progress in his life, he signs up for a class in caregiving and soon has his first client, Trevor. The author could have gone down so many well traveled roads with this book and he didn't. Is it a plot that has been done before? Yes, but Jonathan Evison manages to deliver. His characters are quirky and compelling and likeable. Even Ben, who made me want to scream every time his gloom became gloomier, was a character who ultimately was an underdog worthy of the reader's hope. I'm a sucker for a good road novel and was pleasantly surprised when Ben and Trevor hit the road, not an easy task considering Trevor's disabilities. I've been recommending this book to everyone. It has the kind of humor and charm that defies being lumped into a "type" that would limit it to certain readers.
