Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Broken Harbor

Tana French has become one of my favorite crime writers. This may be her fourth book in the series, but each can be independently read. Tana does such a good job of providing us realistic characters, that one can come to believe this is a true crime book. Fortunately, it's not. If a tree branch is scraping against your window, definitely trim the tree before starting this book. Another wonderful feature of this book, is the impact of the murder scene on the awful memories of the lead detective and his family. We get two mysteries in one!

Picked this one up in a used book store while traveling. Yes, it's about intrigue, consequences of war, and the intermingling of cultures. It's also about integrity, strength of character, and resiliency. A very good read, and comes highly recommended from me for the historical fiction fan.

When I want in-depth understanding of how events affect real people, I read Chris Bohjalian. This is the latest of several books I've read of his, and every one has left me amazed by his skill in telling a story, and giving the reader something profound to think about.

Breakdown a VI Warshawski Novel

Aaaaah. I can relax now. The suspense is over. Book is read, and I know what happened and why. I'm not a spoiler, so you'll have to read the book to find out. Had me guessing almost to the last page. V.I. may be getting older, but she's still the best! Thank you Sara Paretsky for ending my dry spell. Now I want more!

If Erik Larson had been required reading in History class, my whole perspective on the interweavings of events, culture, politics, and human nature would have been enhanced. Thank you Mr. Larson for another outstanding book!
