Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Up High in the Trees
by
Brinkman, Kiara

A very haunting read. It captures a disturbingly truthful narrative, and gives us a lesson that growing up is a really intimidating, and terrifying thing, yet we learn to live with it, even if we do not exactly understand it.

World Without Us
by
Alan Weisman
Lonerwor
, September 10, 2007
A straight-foward look at a future apocalypse, and a chilling statement about appreciating how the world works and accepting the fact that no one lives forever. It also allows you to think about what would happen if there no life on earth.

Diana Chronicles
by
Tina Brown
Lonerwor
, August 30, 2007
This is an absolute breaktaking portrait into the life of probably the most influential person who ever lived. People who read, or will read this book, will be amazed how much truth and honesty that Diana really had, and on a much deeper level the balances with her public life, and her most personal pain that reflected each side of her.

How to Hepburn Lessons on Living from Kate the Great
by
Karbo, Karen
Lonerwor
, July 29, 2007
A startling revelation of "Kate The Great", a woman, an actress, a sister, and her mother's daughter, who still has a worldwide impact on-screen, as well as off-screen. The personal, and rare work of a legendary starlet whose no-nonsense independencey came naturally.

Measure of a Man A Spiritual Autobiography
by
Sidney Poitier
Lonerwor
, July 29, 2007
A rare autobiography from the man himself, one of the greatest actors of all-time. A beautifully descripted fortray into the life of a man who has had his lifetime share of the ups and downs of being in the spotlight as a legendary actor, and entertainer.

Lord of the Flies
by
William Golding

The first time I read this novel, I was extremely disturbed by the plot, but the more I read it, the more I got into it. It is a frightening allegory of innocence seduced by the sinster power of nature, and how it can turn you into something dangerous, and unexpected. I could see myself reading it again, and again, and I would definitely recommend it to people who keep searching for something to believe in.

Carrie
by
Stephen King
Lonerwor
, July 26, 2007
This is classic literal work that tells us that we all have our hidden talents, and personalites, and sometimes we have to let our secrets out in the open, whether they are good or bad. It also tells us that the most quietly shy person can have a mask of inner rage that transcends any ordinary aspects into uncommon range of certain breaking points. This is something that Stephen King describes very well in all of his novels.

Pleasures All Mine The Memoir of a Professional Submissive
by
Joan Kelly
Lonerwor
, July 26, 2007
I could see myself reading this book over, and over, because we all have difficulties with our sexuality, and we seek for meaningful relationships, and sometimes at the end, we end up alone, because people may not meet up to our standards, or we may not meet up to their standards. It is kind of a double-edged sword.
