Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Loud laughingly funny, intriguingly engaging, and thrillingly engrossing. Kevin Hearne is a delight to read and his books will keep you entertained the first time, and each time you re-read them. And you will re-read them.

Wherever I Wind Up
by
R A Dickey, Wayne Coffey
K Kulish
, January 01, 2013
This is one of the best autobiographies I have read in quite some time. Brutal, honest, eye-opening and informative, you learn about the man and the sport in a balanced, truthful (warts and all, as the phrase goes) that will have you looking at baseball in a new light. There is a reason R.A. Dickey earned his acclaim on the field in 2012, and his story tells us all how he's deserves it. Wishing him best in his newest chapter and readers a wonderful time enjoying this book.

The Name of the Wind
by
Patrick Rothfuss
K Kulish
, August 04, 2012
Patrick Rothfuss has written a book you do not want to end. A brilliant frame story that recounts a life, as its teller wishes it to be told. The world, the characters, the situations may be labeled fantasyesque given the touch of magic involved, but they all combine in a page-turning story that engages from start to finish. As the title implies, this is only volume one, and volume two is equally engaging. Until the third arrives, they are both worth reading and reading. Mr. Rothfuss knows how to craft a fine tale.

Great, thrilling, a page turner that keeps your attention. More than a teen book. Great tale of Southern life, mystery and love.

Dickson Baseball Dictionary 3rd Edition
by
Paul Dickson
K Kulish
, April 26, 2009
For people who say baseball is "boring" I show them Paul Dickson's book. The background on America's greatest game, the history he supplies and the explanations unmasque the joy, anecdotes and machinations behind the greatest living game of chess played everyday in parks across the Americas and beyond (and developed on dusty little league mounds and city streets). Prices may be high at some of the newer parks, but gaining an appreciation for this wonderful game is worth the price of this amazing reference accessible to everyone.

Final Theory
by
Mark Alpert
K Kulish
, July 05, 2008
Mark Alpert has crafted a scintillating summer read page-turner that will keep thriller lovers on the edge of their seat. Comparisons have been made saying that this is a "DaVinci Code" with science. Sure, but there is more to this tale. Alpert has made the science in his book comprehensible and he has crafted characters that we care about. I for one am looking forward to his next effort.
