Secret River

The Secret River is a lovely book about the clash of cultures in colonial Australia between the English convicts sent into exile to serve their sentences and the black Aborigines native to the country. The descriptions of the land of New South Wales are fantastic.

Miss Zukas & The Stroke Of Death
by

I very much enjoy mysteries and Miss Zukas is a wonderful character. She is a librarian of the old school but with some added twists. The writing is crisp, the plot is intriguing and Miss Zukas is a character that will leave you wanting more.

Assassins Song

M G Vassanji

M.G. Vassanji is a two time winner of the Giller Prize and this novel could give him a third prize. This is a story of a boy born in India who is destined from birth for a very specific life role as the representative on earth of a mystic/saint. The tale of his struggle to find where he fits in a new India is told by a master storyteller.

Hatbox Letters

This is a lovely story of how a middle-aged woman deals with the lost of her husband. Beth Powning explores all the stages of grief and her character Kate finds that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that in some respects, she is starting her life over again. A lovely story beautifully written.

Book Of The Dead
by
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Anyone lucky enough to pick up a novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is in for a great treat. Book of the Dead is the third book in a trilogy featuring Agent Pendergast - surely one of the most unusual FBI agents in fiction. The book is fast paced and I stayed up most of one night to finish it. Read it - it is the best!

Miss Zukas & The Stroke Of Death

I love mysteries - of all kinds. Miss Zukas and the Stroke of Death was the first mystery by Jo Dereske that I had read. The character of Miss Zukas is wonderfully constructed. Superficially she is the stereotype of the old maid librarian, but she is so much more than that. The supporting cast of characters are also great. I would recommend this series to any reader to loves mysteries with a bit of a comic twist.

Hatbox Letters

I am in the middle of reading The Hatbox Letters and it is such a thought provoking and gripping book. I had decided to read the book only because the author lives in New Brunswick - my home province. I am so glad that I did not miss out on this wonderful book. I am the same age as Kate in the novel and can identify with her in many ways. This is a reading treat and should not be missed.
