Anhs Anger

This book is a wonderful tool to use with children and adults alike when teaching about mindfulness and intense emotion. In the story, a boy named Anh is asked by his grandfather to stop playing with his blocks and come to dinner. Anh doesn't want to stop playing and begins to cry. When grandfather tries to comfort Anh, Anh gets very upset, pushing his grandfather and knocking over his blocks. Grandfather asks Anh to go to his room and sit with his anger, reassuring Anh that he will come in when Anh was calm and able to talk. The remainder of the story illustrates that when Anh is able to sit with his anger, recognize it as a part of himself, and give it space to dance and howl and pound the ground, his anger shrinks from a wild monster down into a small presence, and then dissipates completely. With beautiful illustrations, we see Anh and his anger sitting together, breathing in and breathing out, and sitting together some more. The book ends with Anh and his grandfather talking and eating together.

A moving and emotional "in one sitting" kind of read. The author does a fantastic job giving voice to the child, transforming him from a one-dimensional "victim" into the co-author of his own world. Highly recommended.

Passionate, playful, honest & heartbreaking. As all young adult fiction should be. One of my all time favorites. (ps, I'm older than a young adult)
