Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I have been a devoted fan of the brilliant Mr. Auster since I read The New York Triology when it first came out. Being that the last year has been so dismal and our country's future looks pretty damn bleak right now, the joy of knowing that a new Paul Auster novel is soon to be released keeps me going. I gave it five stars without having read it yet because I know this will be worthy of every one. Can't wait!!

The Shining

I was surprised to see this book listed last as one of the scariest books vs. film versions, so I decided to check out some comments and found none. So ... it's been years since I read this book, but it has stayed with me all this time. This is one of the scariest books I have ever read, period. I am thankful that I read the book when it came out, therefore before the film, because the film was HORRIBLE!!! I am sorry, all you "Shining" and Jack Nicholson fans, but it was not representative of the brilliance that this story presents. The unraveling and possession of Danny's father happens slowly, and very poignantly. His mother is strong and tries to protect him, unlike the shrillness of Shelley Duvall's character. The relationship between Danny and the cook is brief but important. And the Overlook and all its' rooms and corners and ... most of all ... its' topiary animals will keep you up at night unable to sleep for the sheer terror they provide. Do yourself a big favor if you loved the film: read the book. You will find a much more nuanced and truly frightening story in its' pages.
