Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Evangeline & Selected Tales & Poems
by
Henry Wa Longfellow

I have never been really into reading poetry because I never understood it. I could never wrap my mind around the poets concept. So, when I had to do research on a poet when I was in high school, I couldn't help but groan. I somehow fell upon Longfellow and absolutely loved him. Maybe it is because I am very visually oriented, but the way he writes his poetry is so descriptive and rich you can't help but be drawn into it. He keeps it simple enough for you to read and enjoy it, but there is also an underlying meaning to allow the reader to experience the words themselves. Longfellow is definitely my favorite poet!

Song Of The Lioness 01 Alanna The First Adventure
by

I read this book when I was in Junior High and even though I am almost 22, I have never come across a more original storyteller than Pierce. She immediately grabs your attention from the first page. Alanna is a great character. One who makes girls proud and feel they can do anything their heart desires. Her courage and willingness to beat all odds makes all readers want to cheer her on. This is the beginning of her journey to become a lady knight and a powerful magician. Once you start, you will not be able to stop.

Daughter of Joy
by
Kathleen Morgan

Kathleen Morgan is a wonderful storyteller, and out of the several I have read of hers this one is my favorite. Abigail lost her family and needed something to do to escape her sadness. She decides to be a housekeeper for the gruff Conor McKay and help tutor his daughter. Her sweet nature continues to chip away at Conor and his daughter's cold hearts. Love will bloom though the path will not be without trials. Anyone, who loves a good love and family story will love this Inspirational Romance. Enjoy!

Wild Rose

Morren spun a magnificent tale with this one. I love the main character, Geneva, who is such an innocent tomboy, whom you feel for when she struggles to keep her independence. When Caleb comes into the scene, a wonderful friendship begins a budding love that will heal them both. I really enjoyed the sensitivity in this story. It played like a movie in my mind and is definitely one of my favorites.
