Powell's 2023 Book Preview: The Second Quarter
(0 comment)
Although spring may be teasing us with its sunshine more than following through with any promises (we saw that weird snow flurry the other day, spring), there’s always one constant we can rely on: the months of April through June have some killer new book releases. These upcoming books are filled with aliens and haunted houses...

Team of Rivals The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
by
Doris Kearns Goodwin

Not only well researched, but well written. Goodwin does a thought-provoking analysis of the political concepts of Abraham Lincoln. Not too many historians have even thought as deep as she has on the concepts and political motivations of Lincoln. Send me back to my own history and political science books for a quick review. And, guess what, Goodwin is very acceptable on her conclusions. Great job! This one is not only a page-turner, but a mind-changler!!!!

Things They Carried
by
Tim O'Brien

Tim O'Brien can do no wrong with this book, even though many of his Vietnam Conflict soldiers did. Everyone of my friends who served in this "polce action" point to the realism within the binding of this book. Too bad that many suffered not only in the war, but when they returned home. No one that reads this book cannot helped to be touched by the writing of O'Brien. Made sure it was on mandatory reading list at my high school before I retired this past Augus.

Stephen King, Scribner

The scenerio sounds so familiar. I am an English teacher (secondary and university level) that totally identified with the plot, the characters, the themes -- everything in the novel. Needless to say, this is another "top of the list" for Stephen King. Even with all of the novels and short stories that he has written, every new one has a fresh twist -- no formula writing of this novelist. Great Read!!!

American Indian Medicine
by
Virgil J Vogel

Vogel has gone beyond his normal research in this work. Have checked this book out several times from the library -- planning to order a copy for myself since I have referred to it several times. This is not only an overall analysis of Native American medicine, but goes into detail of the history and origins of each by nation and use. Outstanding!!! is not the work for this work. I have not seen a work of this magnitude and diversity in this area, for any area for that matter.

Traditional American Indian Literatures
by
Kroeber
Achowalogen
, July 16, 2011
Very few criticals have both the text and analysis within the binding of a book. However, Kroeber brings to his work both the text and analysis in such a manner that the reader can reference and review the analysis. Also, Krober brings options that allows the reader to select his/her own conclusion, or make another based on a a combination -- including the reader's own analysis.
