Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Other Side Of Paradise
by
Staceyann Chin
Ronald Taylor
, May 16, 2009
I know it's a cliche, but "The Other Side of Paradise," a memoir by Womyn-Warrior Poet-Extraordinaire Staceyann Chin, is quite inspirational. She takes the unusual step of writing in the first-person present. Thus we experience her life as she truly remembers it. At turns heart-breaking and even funny, Paradise is a must read for Chin fans and those just coming to her writing.

Mystery of the Aleph Mathematics the Kabbalah & the Search for Infinity
by
Amir D Aczel
Ronald Taylor
, April 15, 2009
I had to the read this book overnight for an assignment. I thought I would hate it. Boy was I wrong. I loved this book. Aczel writes in a very engaging, accessible style. He never goes over the head of the reader and writes just enough about Kabbalah, remaining focused on the enigmatic Georg Cantor and mathematics.

Say Youre One Of Them
by
Uwem Akpan
Ronald Taylor
, March 30, 2009
Akpan's debut is a heartbreaking work. It doesn't conform to sentimentality nor stereotype. At the same time, it presents three-dimensional characters and a fullness in all of its five stories. Whenever I hear anyone disparage short story collections -- especially by first-time authors -- as being banal, uninteresting and of little importance, Say You're One of Them will be my convincing evidence to the contrary.

Song of Solomon
by
Toni Morrison
Ronald Taylor
, March 28, 2009
I re-read "Song of Solomon" quite frequently and am always taken aback by the book's power. It is a novel about coming-of-age and of self-discovery. But it is that and much, much more: In telling the tale of Milkman Dead and all of those that he comes in contact with, Morrison relates the story of not only Black America, but also the human spirit. "Song of Solomon" is a complex story that borrows from history, African mythology (The Mwindo Epic of the Congo) and the rich tradition of American Literature. No other contemporary American novelist can compete on the same level as Morrison. Her writing is believable, insightful and always lyrical. "Song of Solomon" is clearly a must for any English professor's list of great reads.
