C Pam Zhang: Powell’s Q&A: C Pam Zhang, author of ‘Land of Milk and Honey’ (0 comment)
Describe your latest book/project/work. Land of Milk and Honey is about the search for pleasure at the end of the world. A smog has descended and killed all food crops when an American chef is lured to a secret colony of the wealthy at the border of Italy. It’s the story of how one woman comes alive again to food, to her body, to her own source...

How the author was able to tell such a horrifying tale with such beauty and humor is amazing. This one you can't put down.

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
    lissi, March 30, 2012
Difficult to read, but oh so worth it. This seem to be "fractured" family pulls together to show love that transcends their situation. Beautiful.

    11 22 63 by Stephen King, Scribner
    lissi, February 09, 2012
My first Stephen King, and it didn't disappoint! The size scared me a little but I can't remember going through a book as fast. The concept of time travel and Kings' handling of it, the twists, turns and surprises keep you guessing throughout. A real joy!

    Gilead Uk by Marilynne Robinson
    lissi, September 26, 2011
Beautiful book with lots of lessons about what matters in life. It's nice to read that someone who seems to have the answers to what most of us are searching for is also human in the mistakes he makes. It gives the rest of us hope.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
    lissi, September 07, 2011
How Mistry found humor and humanity in such a sad tale is amazing. How these characters remained human under the harsh conditions that were imposed is remarkable. I just finished and I feel the sadness of these characters and of this story will remain with me for some time.

    Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman
    lissi, September 06, 2011
Totally enjoyed this story of the life of a newspaper and those who made it happen. I can say from my own experience, he got it right, from the top to the bottom. A crazy, quirky group of characters with largely unresolved stories carry you through this paper's history and keep the pages turning.

    Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
    lissi, September 04, 2011
A beautifully written, quiet book about faith, family, friends & forgiveness. Gilead goes beyond religion to speak of the simple things that give life meaning. And although John Ames seems to have found the spiritual answers to a peaceful, happy life, even he has issues to work through. It gives the rest of us hope. A pure joy.

Truth & Beauty A Friendship by Ann Patchett
    lissi, September 02, 2011
Good book, well written about an unusual friendship. To me, what there was of Lucy Grealy's story was compelling. I'm looking forward to reading "The Autobiography of a Face" since I've read that her writing is beautiful. But what I missed in "Truth & Beauty" was the depth of Lucy. What was it about her that made so many people care so deeply for her. I can't believe that it was just the celebrity of her story that kept her friends giving so much when, it appears from this book, that she gave so little. Ann Patchett seems to have made herself out to be a saint without ever explaining what their friendship meant to her. I would love to hear another side to this story.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Lucia Graves
    lissi, September 01, 2011
I was looking for a good mystery and this one did the trick. Loved this book. You're there, in the dark streets of Barcelona, with Julian Carax, Daniel and his book. It keeps you guessing till the end. Can't wait to read his other novels.

    Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
    lissi, September 01, 2011
My first Barbara Kingsolver novel and I'm hooked. Her writing is wonderful. You are there, in Africa with the oppressing heat, the jungle, the beautiful and resourceful Africans and the Price family. I loved how Africa changed each of them; well, most of them, and how little they really had to give Africa. I read on to "Animal Dreams" which although not as epic a tale, was a beautiful one. Looking forward to reading all that the author has written.
