Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Man of Numbers
by
Keith Devlin
stoutandy
, December 12, 2011
"The Man of Numbers" is not a book to be passed up by its title or assumed as "only for math nerds." Keith Devlin had produced a simplistic profile on Fibonacci, an Italian man who modernized arithmetic in 1202 devising the Hindu-Arabic number system (0-9). This book is not intimidating, especially for non-math people like me. Keith Devlin had simplified the historical references and explanations. What one would get out of 158 pages of such a man of amazing feat, is knowledge that was never thought of and will never leave.

Philip Guston Collected Writings Lectures & Conversations
by
Philip Guston, Clark Coolidge
stoutandy
, June 04, 2011
Finally there is a book released on painter Philip Guston and edited by poet Clark Coolidge, where the past will bring you to the present tense. The lectures and interviews are of occurrence without storytelling of friends of past. This book is for the painter who wants to discover or re-discover a truth back when telephones should be ignored. An honest compiled read worth every minute to own.

Day Ocean State of Stars Night Poems & Writings 1989 & 1999 2006
by
Scalapino, Leslie

, September 17, 2007
Throughout Scalapino's career, she has recognized herself to be one of the leading poets of our time. Her new book "Day Ocean State..." is a collection of her best-suited writings and more. This is a great introduction to her as well. What comes to mind is reflection/meditation, composition all in one whole of a half articulated in such a manner factually manifesting itself to come alive within itself as (itself). Brilliance doesn't come so often and when it does, take advatage of it!
