Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Cause Celeb

As Helen Fielding's first book, you can see how it's a bit of practice to her later works on Bridget Jones. The characters are interesting and funny, but the circumstances are just too far-fetched to be believed. The book provides commentary on the contrast between the basic necessities of life and the celebrity elite, who are so far removed from those basic necessities that the two can't even relate to each other. And while making valid points about differing segments of society, the points were made a few too many times in my opinion. Worth reading, but not her best work.

The Wild Girl: The Notebooks of Ned Giles, 1932

This is a very engaging story that sets the stage for distrust and hatred, and as the characters come to know each other, they discover that despite racial, cultural and communication barriers there are things to value in each other. Set in the 1930s in the mountains of Mexico, this story of war between the Americans and Mexicans and one of the last free tribes of Apache is compelling to read and surprising in many ways.

Inclusion Paradox the Obama Era & the Transformation of Global Diversity

This book is a great resource on better understanding some of the major drivers of diversity. And in light of those drivers, providing some practical approaches to overcoming them. I was specifically looking for something to improve my own understanding and help me develop successful strategies - the ideas and recommendations by the author are a great step in that direction.

Bong Hits 4 Jesus: A Perfect Constitutional Storm in Alaska's Capital
by
James C. Foster

In depth analysis of the context and 2007 Supreme Court case of Morse v. Frederick. Foster helps explain the circumstances and dynamics that led to this both interesting and confusing First Amendment case where so many opportunities were missed - by not only both sides, but also by the community and ultimately by the courts. While in places the writing becomes a bit technical, the underlying story and research in bringing it to light is definitely worth the read.
