Age of Miracles

This book drew me in immediately - not only does it have a unique story, it also has a unique narration. The story is told by an 11-year-old girl as Earth begins to slow its spinning. As she describes the devastating consequences of "the slowing," I found myself engrossed by the feeling that this scenario sounds almost... possible. Perhaps more unsettling is that the humans that inhabit Earth have no idea why they are facing this possible life-ending turn of events (no pun intended). The writing style surprised me; I would argue that there really is no traditional beginning, middle, and end. She tells the story as a matter of fact, with lovely personal stories interwoven. I highly recommend this engrossing, quick read.

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

I cast my vote for this amazing read as 2012 Puddly Award. It reads like a novel, but has intrigue, suspense, and is the most real & sincere medical drama I've ever read. You waver between admiration, pity, and outright frustration with the Lacks family. The author does as an excellent job explaining the biology and medicine as she does the humanity. Great read!

Manhunt The Twelve Day Chase for Lincolns Killer
by
James L Swanson

I purchased this book at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. after viewing a fascinating exhibit on the life of President Lincoln. Much of it was based on James Swanson's book, "Manhunt," so naturally I purchased a copy in the giftshop. People seldom believe me when I say it, but this book is absolutely riveting, I couldn't put it down. I admit some of the fascination may have been fueled by the exhibit at the Newseum, coupled by my visit to Ford's Theater and the Petersen House (where Lincoln died), but I think anyone with the least bit of interest in American history would enjoy this book. Read it!
