Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Jewel of the Kalderash: The Kronos Chronicles: Book III

This series was fabulous, and the ending was the perfect mix of bitter and sweet. Petra loses something prized, but wins what's important.

All Clear Blackout 2
by
Connie Willis
Mary Davis
, January 01, 2011
I have eagerly awaited this book since reading the first half of the story in Blackout. The sequel did not disappoint. Connie Willis has the ability to keep you guessing, keep you interested, and keep you emotionally involved with characters throughout. Fantastic!

Somehow Form a Family Stories That Are Mostly True
by
Tony Earley

I picked up this book at the library for no particular reason other than I liked the title. I am not from the south, I was not raised how the author was raised, and I though I had almost no common experiences with the people in his book. Then, after 3 stories, I decided I need to buy the book so I don't cry when it has to be returned to the library. It's that good. I'm going to hunt down his fiction next.

Human Croquet
by
Kate Atkinson

This book served as my Kate Atkinson gateway drug. Read it at your own risk - you may find yourself combing the aisles for more of her surreal, compelling, filled-with-coincidences fiction.

Dont Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
by
Mo Willems
Mary Davis
, December 19, 2006
My son asks for this book again and again. Mo Willems puts so much expression into his illustrations that kids can tell what the pigeon is thinking/feeling/saying even if they can't read yet. It's worth reading just for the page of bribery and begging.

Maisy Goes Camping
by
Lucy Cousins
Mary Davis
, August 24, 2006
Whether I like it or not is irrelevant, this book is a big hit with my son (age 2.5). He has requested it as many as 5 times in a row. Colorful, simple illustrations, clear, easy text, a fun story about camping with your friends...what's not to love?
