Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life

Loved this book! A 2008 Christmas gift from my gardening son that simply captured me! Very different from Barbara Kingsolver's acclaimed novels, it combines her voice with that of her daughters and husband to tell the story of their first year deliberately eating only food they could grow themselves or buy in their neighborhood. It is unsentimental, hilariously funny, provides scientific exploration of a serious subject, and even includes some great recipes! I grew up on a small family farm on Oregon's McKenzie River, and this could have been my story -- except we didn't PLAN to be so "healthy" or environmentally "correct." We just didn't have much money and needed to eat. Later, I realized how delicious our fresh eggs and vegetables, homemade butter, and organic meats had been -- and how many screamingly funny adventures my brothers and I had had while simply doing our chores. This book brought back all those memories for me, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable read for anyone, even those who don't believe they are particularly interested in "organic farming," "local eating," or any other kind of "food" book -- It's much, much more than that!
