Beautiful Ruins

We read this book for our book club book in December and I really clicked with it. It's been one of my favorite books of our 2012 reads. The book travels back and forth in time between early 1960's and current time and travels location-wise between Italy, Hollywood and the Northwest. I really clicked with the characters who are all imperfect and very human. There are many themes within the book but I would say the main theme, obviously alluded to in the title, is beauty and the effects of time on all that is beautiful. I found the book well-written homage to moments and the lasting effects of momentary decisions. The book could have been too sad to read but the author stabilized it with humor and a sense of hope.

The Twelve Bots of Christmas

We bought this for our four year old son for Christmas. He loves it! We read it for the next month every night. My only warning is that if your child is really "into" robots, you may get tired of it and I would consider giving it prior to Christmas unless you want to be reading it well into spring.

I had a hard time choosing my favorite book of 2011. It has been a good year for books. "The Paris Wife" though has been one that stands out for me. The characters are beautifully written. One feels that you know Hadley and Ernest as friends by the end of the book and their relationship is beautifully rendered with all its complexity.

Waiting For Winter

The illustrations in this book are beautiful yet captivating and playful for kids. The story is charming and brought forth smiles and giggles from my 3 and 4 year old sons. Tousled looking animals are naively trying to imagine snow without having seen it before so young children can "get the joke." We really enjoy it!

Little Red A Fizzingly Good Yarn

My 4 year old son and his little brother (age 3) love this book. The illustrations are fabulous and draw the readers further into the clever retelling of Little Red Riding Hood as a little boy. The wolf is properly scary until the end where he becomes a comic figure which keeps the story appropriate for young readers.
