Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. We need more creative activities for kids to explore in their free time. Imagination is the most powerful tool for success. Thanks Joel for the fun projects that kids can enjoy with or without parents and for the awesome fun stuff we found on-line that shows your creativity. Keep it up.

Tyrannosaurus Tex

Unexpected gem of a find. This book sports a whole new twist on the classic western style. The vivid images and clever storyline bring it a timeless feeling. The illustrations go hand in hand with the wonderful atmosphere of the old west meets older west theme. Hard to find an actual copy, so we have borrowed this from the library for years. One of our favorite children's stories.

Simple, poignant. The making of a coat and the making of relationships; And this story relates to the fabric of society from years gone by. Artisans, parents and elementary aged children will all enjoy this book.

Banner in the Sky
by
James Ramsey Ullman

Riveting to a class of fifth graders during read-a-loud time, this story is gripping. You can almost experience the singing wind and biting cold of the mountain beside the clanging gear and internal dialogue of the protagonist. He struggles internally to shape his self image into a rock solid equivalent of the Fortress, something to be conquered and overcome. Recommended for anyone who wants to understand why climbing a mountain can give you a path into your own self worth.
