Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Philadelphia Chickens

I introduced this album to our charter elementary school (MLA Portland, OR) for a pajama party, and the 1st-graders begged to dance to Pajama Time over and over. Next the music teacher got ahold of it, and promptly added it to the curriculum because of the many music genres introduced: swing, big band and blues to name a few. Our school Winter Shows have featured her songs for several years now. Sandra Boynton had already won my heart with her chocolate book and the snappy cadence of her board books, but now I can sing to my Faraway Cookies with all the soul they deserve!

Dog Train A Wild Ride on the Rock & Roll Side
by
Sandra Boynton

This is Sandra Boynton's fourth album, and along with her witty lyrics, its the richest one musically! Its all about attitude, from the nose on paws after an exhilerating blues harp ride on Dog Train, to the cheery satire of Boring Song, to the height of self-expression in Tantrum and Pots & Pans. Don't miss the unexpected duet with "Weird Al" Yankovic and Kate Winslet (I Need a Nap). Anyone who has been a kid, and misses being that honest, will love this music.

Blue Moo Deluxe Illustrated Songbook 17 Jukebox Hits from Way Back Never With CD
by

If you are sick of cutsey children's music, yet still have a sense of humor, Blue Moo is for you and your family. In 50's and 60's style with delicious rhythm and sly charm, well-known artists have a little fun without any romantic, holiday or birthday references. After a few listens, you'll swear you've always known these songs!

Crashproof Your Kids: Make Your Teen a Safer, Smarter Driver
by
Timothy C. Smith
Denise Amos
, November 02, 2007
Crash-Proof Your Kids is just what I needed to launch my teenager into Portland's traffic. This book is no "crash course;" its a systematic, practical manual for enabling a parent to gain confidance in teaching driving. Written by a parent & professional driver, Timothy C. Smith sprinkles in humor, maintenance tips & statistics, with a strong emphasis on safety and skill-building. It even helps you profile your teen as to whether s/he is mature enough to drive! I highly recommend it.
