Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. If you are looking for a way to learn about the stock market crash that doesn't involve reading newspapers, but instead reading one of the best fiction pieces of the 21st Century, you just found your book. Haslett does an amazing job of incorporating really boring financial information into a book built on suspense, wonderful character development, and a thousand beautiful little details that make the book a masterpiece. If you love the classics and were waiting for somebody in the 21st Century to step up to that kind of brilliance, you will love this book.

Eyre Affair Thursday Next 01
by
Jasper Fforde

Jasper Fforde is a genius. If you love to read, as I'm assuming you do if you're taking the time to read this comment, you will love this book. Particularly if you've read many of the English classics. Fforde is a great one for references, and I've got to tell you there's nothing that makes you feel smarter than understanding a good literary pun. Not only that, but Thursday Next is a delightful character who gets into all kinds of sticky situations with characters such as Millon de Floss, Jack Schitt, Hamlet, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday Next. Even if you don't get all the references (which, I can assure you, I did not) it's still a great mystery novel and an all around well written book.

Jitterbug Perfume
by
Tom Robbins

, August 05, 2012
Whenever somebody asks me what my favorite book is I tell them Jitterbug Perfume. In actuality I probably don't have a favorite book, but I generally assume that when someone asks about your favorite book they are looking for something new and exciting to read, and Tom Robbins fulfills that requirement. Particularly in these hot summer days, Robbins hallucination inspired imagination is easily welcomed by my sweaty, confused brain. Robbins is not the most linear of writers, so if you're looking for a story with a beginning, middle and end this book is probably not for you. However, if you're looking for something with brilliant, hilarious writing that will take your mind on an adventure out of this hot, sweaty world and into another, this is the book for you.
