Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

Changes Collegium Chronicles Book 3 by Mercedes Lackey
    Jillian, January 03, 2013
This has to be my favorite of Lackey's series I cant wait to read the 4th book. If you are reading this review and havent read the first two book I highly recommend picking them up if you have read them I suggest getting the 3rd and 4th together even at 400 pages this book goes way too fast

John Dies at the End by David Wong
    Jillian, January 10, 2011
This book is sick, twisted and incredibly fun. That's all I'm going to say because if you've bothered to read this far you need to get John dies at the end and probably already know that.

City Quilts 12 Dramatic Projects Inspired By Urban Views by Cherri House
    Jillian, November 11, 2010
This is the best quilting book ever! The projects are modern and beautiful, showing you can have as much fun with solid colors as you can with prints. Being a beginner quilter I found Cherri's tips and hints very helpful but I'm sure anyone with years of experience would love this book just as much as I did.

Foundation: Valdemar: Collegium Chronicles 1 by Mercedes Lackey
    Jillian, September 20, 2010
Wow this book was incredible! I found it in the library and immediately had to go out and buy it. The characters are wonderfully portrayed and very easy to get attached to. I can't wait for the next in the series to come out.

9tail Fox by John Courtenay Grimwood
    Jillian, September 15, 2010
It's easy to get sucked into Bobby Zha's world, even if you're never quite sure where the twists and turns are going to lead. With characters easy to hate and love this book is a must have.

Boy With The Cuckoo Clock Heart by Mathias Malzieu
    Jillian, March 16, 2010
This story is wonderful your heart will melt for little Jack and his struggles to win Miss Acacia's affection. Translation has created a few awkward sentences but they're minor and forgettable once you get to know the characters and caught up in the story.

Across The Nightingale Floor 01 Sword Of the Warrior by Lian Hearn
    Jillian, March 08, 2010
This is a delightful story that is perfect for travel and great for almost any age. The books are small so get the next in the series or you'll be dancing in your seat wondering what comes next.

Tegami Bachi Volume 2 by Hiroyuki Asada
    Jillian, March 08, 2010
I preordered this and waited and waited then it arrived and five minutes later I was done! The series definitely gets better with volume 2 so I'm really looking forward to number 3. My recommendation make sure you have other manga to read and be patient translation takes time.

Nightmare Inspector Yumekui Kenbun Volume 1 by Shin Mashiba
    Jillian, March 08, 2010
ooh very spooky! One of my favorite series Nightmare Inspector will drag you in and never let you go. Beware though the stories are very Japanese so don't expect a happy ending.

Apathy & Other Small Victories by Paul Neilan
    Jillian, February 21, 2010
If you live in Portland and have deaf friends this book is a riot. If you don't I highly suggest this as your next airplane book, it gets a little slow about two thirds in but it is well worth it to finish.

    Leviathan 01 by Scott Westerfeld
    Jillian, January 02, 2010
Wow, this book was fantastic I only wish there had been some warning that it was a series. The pages just kept flying by and there was so much story left. A must have for any book shelf no matter the readers age.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
    Jillian, January 02, 2010
Overwhelmingly the best fantasy book of the decade with striking moments of love and loss. Though beware it will leave you breathlessly waiting for the next book.

The Name of the Wind (the Kingkiller Chronicle: Day One) by Patrick Rothfuss
    Jillian, November 23, 2008
I picked this up on a whim and couldn't have been more pleased, the story is well written and surprisingly easy to follow while remaining complex and engaging. I recommend it to those who enjoyed Harry Potter and those who didn't each I'm sure will find it worth their time.
