Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Poppy series was a great discovery for us. I was getting so tired of The Magic Tree House, and then we found these sweet, fun books by Avi. The characters have exciting adventures getting away from an owl, finding a new home, and the language is so rich and playful. I love reading these out loud to my daughter, and she keeps begging me to read more!

Burning Plain & Other Stories
by
Juan Rulfo
Febe
, February 23, 2009
Rulfo is one of Latin America's lesser read writers, but probably one of it's best. These stories are lyrical and deceptively simple, painting subtle pictures of life in rural Mexico. There's very little pretense in Rulfo's writing, and you'll find yourself going back again and again just to read a sentence. This collection of short stories does not let the reader romanticize Mexican life. It creates a world that endures and lingers in the imagination.
