Life She Was Given
by

This is the best book I've read in a long time! It encompasses life in the 1930s and how some people regarded individuals born with abnormalities as freaks and sent them off to circuses. It encompasses motherly love for their offspring, animal abuse, and finding someone to love you no matter what your differences. I do have to say, there are sad parts (I actually had tears pouring down my face) in it since it deals with these heart wrenching topics, but it still well worth the read! I highly recommend this book!

Knocking on Heavens Door The Path to a Better Way of Death
by
Katy Butler
bscheldt
, November 20, 2013
This book has so much meaning. My father passed away very unexpectedly this last September at his home, the same place where he was born 78 years earlier. We had no clue his life was in jeopardy! In Katy Butler's book, she explains that this is how most people wish to go from this life, at home, peacefully; not in a hospital hooked up to machines and adding up the bills for survivors or stressing the caregiver to the extent of a breakdown or bankruptcy. This book made me realize how lucky my Dad was! And as hard as it was on the family to lose him so quickly without saying goodbye, we would not have wanted to see him pass any other way. Katy made me stop and think about how technology in medicine and machines have not necessarily made our quality of life (or death) better. Sometimes we do more damage by trying to help save the people we love. I would highly recommend this book for anyone, whether you are a spouse, mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, or friend. Someday you will be a caregiver and this book may become very useful to you!

Frankensteins Cat Cuddling Up to Biotechs Brave New Beasts
by
Anthes, Emily

This could be a very controversial book; whether you side with scientific research or with animal welfare; whether you think we should tinker with mother nature or whether we should exploit animals. Is this to find a way to better our lives or is it just for curiosity or entertainment? How far should we go in our manipulation of other living things, from dogs, cats and rats to fish, and even insects. This made me wonder what will our world be like in years to come. Very interesting!

Bond

Pacelle, Wayne

It amazes me the abuses that humans can inflict upon animals; not only cats and dogs, but also baby seals, wild buffalo, wild horses and whales to name a few. Wayne Pacelle's book decribes the work that the Humane Society and other animal organizations have done to protect these animals to make them safe and some of the work still needing to be done. No matter how you feel about the Humane Society as an organization, the book speaks for the innocent beings that can not speak for themselves!

I normally don't read "who done it" books, but this book was one of the best books I've read in some time! The last thing a parent would want to hear is that your child is suspected of murdering another child. This book is about the anguish a family goes through to prove their child's innocence. It is also about how well we know our family and ourselves. I highly recommend this book!

This book was amazing. It's about the lives of the anomalies that work in P.T. Barnum's museum of oddities. What makes this book so interesting, first of all, today, Barnum would never get by with exploiting people the way he did. Secondly, this book shows that the giantess, the fat lady, the skeleton man, the conjoined twin, the bearded lady all had emotions and lives beyond the museum. You learn the feelings of these people that Barnum had on display for the world to pass by and view. I highly recommend this book!

Love, Love, Love this book! After 500 some pages, I still want more! This book has been the hardest book I've ever read to put down! Most books I've read, by the time they get to this many pages, you can tell the author is getting tired of writing, but not his book, it only gets better as it goes. Drama, comedy, scarey, history and mystery all rolled into one book! It can't get much better than this! I loved the characters and the story. This is the best book I've read in a long time. I hope there's more!

After loosing a friend and co-worker to this disease, I decided to read this book to find out what I could about the killer of so many people. This book is very interesting in that it tells of the advancement and set backs of the search for the cure; the people doing the searching and what they have gone through. I was amazed at how surgeries were done back before anethesia! It is a very informational book and is written in a way that you don't have to be a scientist to understand.

This book was excellent...so much more than a ghost story. The historical aspects of the book made it all the more interesting. And of course, since its takes place in the Midwest, where I'm from, put the story right in my back yard. I learned alot about prohibition that I never knew before and some history of St. Louis that I had not known. A little bit of politics, love, war, crime, family drama, and ghosts. I think anyone would enjoy this book!

If you're a cat person, this is a most certain "must read." If you're not...I still recommend it and I'll guarantee that you will be closer to being a cat person when you finish! People that have bonded with a cat will nod your head through the entire book. The best truism in the book is "Cats aren't something to be "got." They turn up in people's lives when they're needed, and with a purpose that probably won't be understood to begin with." Oh how true! Helen Brown did an excellent job in telling what a wonderful, neaningful experience owning a cat can bring about.

After the media quited down about the shootings, people outside of Colorado, unless you knew someone involved, went on with their lives and didn't focus as much on this tradgedy. This book goes beyond the first week, or month after the shootings. Mr. Cullen tells of the investigation to find what went wrong to cause this and why so many lives were lost that day. People outside of Colorado never heard the rest of the story and Mr. Cullen helps fill in the blanks. Even though the story is very tragic, the book is very interesting

Wild Horse Annie & The Last Of The Musta
by
David Cruise
bscheldt
, March 29, 2010
Velma Johnston devoted her all to saving the wild mustangs and burros from the brutal round ups by cattle ranchers in the American west. This book tells of her passion for these animals and the work she did during the 60s and 70s to get Congress to pass legislation to protect them. Now, a few years ago, a bill was passed, underhandedly, and the protection was taken off these beautiful animals. The Bureau of Land Management has started the round ups again, with helicopters chasing these animals, killing many adult and new born horses, literally running their legs off! Please read this book about the greatest wild horse advocate and let's get her momentum going again and get Congress to pass laws to protect thses animals and all horses in the U.S.

I recommend this book to everyone. It is not only about Oscar, the cat that shows compassion to the dying patients under Dr. Dosa's care, but also shows that there doesn't have to be scientific reasoning behind miracles, just a little faith! It was also very touching how the loved ones of the patients cope with dementia and the process of letting go when the time comes. A very thought provoking book! Oscar helped many of the family members deal with death.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. The love and trust that bonds the abused horses with the children brought to the ranch is incredible! To think that horses that have been abused by people can find trust in children who have been in heartbreaking situations themselves; and the unconditional love the horses give back to these children, to bring the children out of the shells that they have shut themselves into is what I would call a miracle! I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone! All based on true stories and an actual ranch!

Everyone has asked the questions, "Why me?" and "Why does God allow bad things to happen?" This book answers those questions in such a way that I really felt this was a true story! God must have spoken to this writer in order for him to write in such a beautiful, believeable way! It was so easy picturing God having these conversations! At first I wasn't going to read it because a child is killed, but I'm greatful I did because this book answers those questions above. I need to read the book again and highlight the parts that touched me most and then pass it on to family and friends! If it doesn't touch your heart, you probably don't have one!

, March 27, 2008
I have always loved to read books about the Civil War, but my fortee wasn't the battle and strategy side of the war. I love to read about the social aspects, how it affected the lives of people. This is one of the best books I've ever read on that view point. It goes over people's thoughts on death, how soldiers tried to prepare for death before a battle, how loved ones tried to communicate with the lost sons/fathers/brothers and how death strengthened or weakened their religious beliefs. It discusses the different ways people coped with the lose of a family member or friend, the methods of burial and how the government tried to keep track of who was lost in battle. This is probably the ultimate book on the social aspect of the Civil War! What affects people's lives more than death!?

This book tells the story of the how the Civil War divided not only the nation, but families as well. What makes it even more interesting is that it details the division in the First Lady's family, the Todds. It must have been very hard in the days of the Civil War when families were divided by which side of the Union they would support. Abraham and Mary Lincoln received critisim from both sides because of Mary's Kentucky ties. It explains what White House contraversies errupted because of Southern sympathies and how the Lincolns dealt with these family members.

If I Did It Confessions Of The Killer
by
Family, The Goldman

, October 09, 2007
Oh my! This book is a "tell all" by the killer himself! If you thought before that O.J. killed Ron and Nicole, this supports your theory, and if you thought he was innocent, you may want to rethink! I had to keep in mind while I was reading that this is O.J.'s story; Nicole was basically the person out of control. But as I read the book, I could see just how "twisted" O.J.'s mind really is! I am so surprised that he has never been ordered to take an anger management class! I never would have spent a second of my time or a dime of my money on this book if O.J. received the funds, but since the Goldman's received legal rights to the book and a part of the proceeds go to the Ron Goldman Foundation for Justice, I just had to read it! After viewing the trial on television for so long, I'm glad the story is finally being told, by the person who "hypothetically" committed the crime!

This books was even better than I thought it would be; just as good as "Seabiscuit," if not better! This is the story, not only of a famous race horse during a time when most of us can remember, but of the groomer that seemed to communicate and know the horse. The writer finds, through interviews, that the man that knew Secretariat better than anyone, played an important role in the success of the horse. This book about more than just Secretariat, its about other issues behind the scenes of racing and owning a horse. This is a book I plan to read again!

Be prepared to be entertained and educated! This book is heartwarming in telling the story of Charlie, an orphaned buffalo taken in by Veryl Goodnight and Roger Brooks. It is also a very interesting history lesson, not only in the history of this great animal that is native to our Country, but about the Native Americans and their way of life and about Charles Goodnight, who did much for the development of our American West and the bringing back of the buffalo!! The book tells of the strong bonds that sometimes form between animals and humans, and the sacrafices each will make to keep those bonds strong. I'm so glad that I read this book!

The story shows how loved ones (not just man and wife, but also friends and family) can communicate/"feel" over miles, through conflict and even after death. It was one of those books that you think about for quite awhile after you've finished! I loved this book and I plan to read other books by Howard Bahr as soon as I can!
