Daughter of the Blood The Black Jewels Trilogy Book 1
by

One gets the feeling while reading the Black Jewels series, that Anne Bishop is writing directed from her id. Don't get me wrong, the books are all a delightfully trashy and fun read.....but there isn't much subtlety regarding the gender roles among the Blood, or the good versus evil dynamic. These female protagonist, Janealle, is the Mary Sue to end all Mary Sues as she was literally dreamed into existence. Like I said, delightful - trashy and addicting - but not deep.

Shaladors Lady Black Jewels

Fabulous followup to The Shadow Queen. In this book Bishop takes us out of Grayhaven to really get a feel for Dena Nehele, its past, and the people who survived it. Of course we also to check in with people from the original Black Jewels Trilogy, but their sections manage to not take over the new plot and new characters. It is nice to see what is happening in Kaeleer without it feeling shoehorned in. The end provides a nice glimpse for the future while still leaving open the possibility of returning. An excellent addition to the Black Jewels series.

Changeless Parasol Protectorate 02
by

Overall this is a great book in a fun series set in a Steampunk Great Britain. It fleshes out the world introduced in Soulless, and manages to overcome the first book's main flaw in having little buildup to the real danger presented by villains. However, the ending pretty much killed my love. It took a few days to calm down enough to bother giving it a decent rating. Without spoiling all I can say is that the last few pages of Changeless are essentially the first few pages of Blameless. I detest cliffhanger endings in books that demand you buy the sequel in order to find out the ending of a new plot. Does Carriger not believe the world crafted or characters introduced are compelling enough to draw readers back in? Hint: They are. But it is poor form to introduce an entirely new plot on the last bloody page of the book. Rather than entice me to read the next in the series, it has soured me to it. Why should I start a book knowing I'll get no conclusion? For those who enjoyed Soulless, I recommend waiting a few years to bother picking up Changless - at least until the next books in the series are available.

Presentation Zen 1st Edition Simple Ideas on Presentation Design & Delivery
by

Don't waste your money. You can get the entire content of this book in a few minutes by flipping through the pages and reading the headings - or just looking at the pictures. Do you know anyone who ever took an art class in school? Did you? I am not a creative person, but the ideas in here were beyond basic - even for me. And the detailed suggestions offered were for people with large budgets to create their powerpoint or keynote presentations. Oh I should just turn an entire wall of my office into a giant storyboard!? Such a shame I don't have my own office, or one with a wall I am allowed to staple large pieces of paper too on a regular basis. Oh I should use professional photos?! Well gee, why didn't I think of PAYING for every aspect of the in-house presentation my company wanted ME to make - rather than pay a professional to put together? Unless you have never in your life been exposed to the concept of 'ooo pretty' and have a large budge to play with - do not bother with this book. If you are a student and your professor has "strongly recommended" this book - just flip through it to get the basic concepts and don't even consider wasting money on it so you can thoroughly read it to be told how to spend more money you don't have.

Magic Study Study 02

Poison Study was spectacular......this is a lukewarm addition. The only thing that keeps it from being yet another medieval-fantasy-world is the backstory built up in the first book. I kept at this one because I was still invested in Yelana and company.....but now I find I have lost interest. It's not bad - there's just nothing new.

Sky Coyote

Spectacular book! I highly recommend reading the first installment (In the Garden of Iden), but it's not necessary. Other Company stories desperately need to be read in order. This book is probably the best in the series. Baker does a spectacular job getting inside the head of a man who has been alive for thousands of years - spending the entire time witnessing religious persecution. He has developed an intense loathing for religious fervor....and is ordered by The Company to impersonate the God of a Native American tribe in order to save them from the impending doom of white settlers. Quite the conflict.
