Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I like this one very much. The main character, Quaeryt, is young (29, though I notice another reviewer assumes he's a teenager), smarter than he wants most people to know, a former sailor, and an Imager - which could get him killed if the wrong people found out about it. He's had a more knockabout life than Rhennthyl, the hero of the previous Imager series, so isn't quite as full of himself; he is just as ruthless when someone in power is abusing it, though. He happened to be educated at the same time and place as the current ruler of the country where Quaeryt lives (nobody knows where he was actually born, since he was found abandoned as a toddler). The ruler in question knows exactly how smart he is, and wants a useful advisor. Quaeryt is sent to investigate what is happening in a relatively newly conquered province, and the rest of the book is how he gets there, what he finds, and what he does about it. I like the detail in it, because I like knowing the subtler reasons things happen. Modesitt hasn't done the one thing that's always set my teeth on edge this time. I didn't find a single conversation where he repeatedly designated every character speaking by the color of his or her hair - I so much prefer them to be called by name.

Better Basics for the Home Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living

This one is eminently readable, practical and simple and fun. There are details on what equipment to use, where to find some of the more exotic ingredients, and how to make your own of pretty much everything from baby lotion to paint stripper. It was finding the paint stripper recipe that made me decide to buy the book. Each recipe has a list of ingredients, with amounts and options, how to mix them to produce what they are supposed to, and how and how long to store the result. I should also mention the wealth of tips assorted commentary and short essays. I repeat: eminently readable, practical, simple and fun.

I do, in general, think YA fantasy is the best being written these days - for that matter, for the last 20 years at least! The blurb on this one is reasonably accurate. The story itself is a hoot! I have no reservations in recommending it.
