To live in a small southern town in the 1930's was a dual existence. It all depended on the color of your skin. Harper Lee's experiences in such a town are colorfully portrayed in this novel. She presents the background for a questionable crime with empathy and insight. A must read for all Americans.

Wise Woman
by
Philippa Gregory

, August 01, 2009
Philippa Gregory is a master story teller. She has once again created a character whose story catches your interest on the first page and continues to enchant you throughout the book. Alys is a young woman who is looking to be loved. She is raised by a wise woman after her parents die, then is sent to a convent where she is loved by the mother superior until a fire detroys the community and sends her fleeing. Taken to the castle she tries to win the love of the young lord but is treated as a whore. She resorts to witchcraft and spends the rest of her life regretting her decision. Do not read the readers' guide questions at the end, they reveal the ending.

If you like history, Italy or just good reading this is the book for you. When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it. The dangerous times of the Medici era are brought to life with vivid detail. I must read more books by Kalogridis. She is superb.
