I enjoyed this story. It is a metaphorical tale about how individual communities react and inter-relate. A teacher could use this as a social studies book to look at how different socities use natual resources and relate with one and other. From this, a study of Chinese and other nearby counties could be done.

I love Jon Krakauer's writing style! His descriptions of the outdoors and his narritve style make you feel that you on on the hike yourself. This young man was searching for himself and I feel that he did in a strange way...

This is a book about Oregon history. It tells the tale of how a holiday tradition gets started. In the process the reader learns about the diversity of cultures in the early Oregon days and how all the people accepted the many traditions to make a strong community. Good for 7th-12th graders and adults get a kick out of it too. Read it before they make the movie!
