Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Marriage Plot
by

I grabbed this book because I loved Middlesex. It's definitely different and lacks the darker, secretive world I enjoyed so much in that book. The Marriage Plot is an engaging college novel that people headed to college or far enough out to enjoy the memories will likely enjoy. I gave it to several people as a Christmas present, but I'm still waiting for their reviews.

Cutting for Stone

I was hooked from the moment I picked this book up, a time when I thought I had no time to read. It did not disappoint and the story is vibrant and gripping from beginning to end. Medicine, Ethiopia and the emigrant/immigrant experience are the major themes, but really it's a story about love and enduring bonds.

Plan Bee: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Hardest-Working Creatures on thePla net
by
Susan Brackney

Plan Bee (Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Hardest-Working Creatures on the planet) by Susan Brackney. A Quick and interesting intro to honey bees written by a bee keeper. Covers a little of everything; colony collapse, how to be queen, bee anatomy and more. Falls in nicely with the current trends of DIY (real start to finish bee's wax projects) and sustainable agriculture (learn exactly how bees contribute and are effected by shifts in cultivation and habitat). There is even a quiz to determine if you have what it takes to tend a hive yourself. Funny, illustrated and broken into short sections, this would be a great beach read.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life

I thought this book would be old news by the time I got around to reading it. Not so. Entertaining, educational and inspiring. I was inspired to plant cilantro. Baby steps. Makes a great case for eating local, sustainable and making your own food (from seed in most cases). The story of their year is more of a vehicle to address different food economy issues, like bananas and birds.

Middlesex

Because of its prize winning popularity, I heard a lot about this book before a friend gave it to me and it sat on my "to read" shelf. Nothing about the plot summary or themes spoke to me or peaked my interest, but this book is great. I was hooked right from the start and delivered right through to the end. If you're like me, hesitating about this one, open it up.

A Fine Balance

Very intense and not exactly uplifting, but well worth it if you can handle a little tragedy in your novels. Many images from this book are still vivid in my mind, 7 years after reading.
