Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lies My Teacher Told Me Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong
by

I have always been rather curious about history, even if I could barely stay awake in history class in high school. My curiosity generally led me to the library, where I could supplement my notes. So it was with some surprise that I came across Professor Loewen's book several years ago. As I eat my grilled cheese sandwich -- professional bakers rarely get much of a break at this time of year -- this Thanksgiving, I am reminded of that book, and, in particular, the section on the First Thanksgiving. It's a very entertaining read, and may just change your perspective on some historic events that you think you know.

Think Like A Chef
by
Tom Colicchio

I fully admit to being a food junkie. I love eating it. I love seeing it. I love making it. So naturally, I have a large cookbook collection. What book(s) do I always reach for? Think like a Chef by Tom Colicchio, La Technique by Jacques Pepin, and Field of Greens by Annie Somerville. Think like a Chef takes the reader/cook through the various stages of a dish, first exposing you to techniques, then to specific ingredients, and finally to combinations. You get to see how a braise works on different meats or vegetables. You get to see how to make a tomato shine in a dish. And once you begin to fit the pieces together, you have thought like a chef. And now you can go on to other dishes and ingredients with zeal, knowing that you can make them shine.

I saw this film several years ago in a small theater in Providence, RI, and was stunned at the incredible diversity of influences displayed in the film. It draws you into the lives of the characters so thoroughly that you'll not look at other people quite the same way again.

Understanding Comics the Invisible Art
by

Back in the Dark Ages of college, my Senior Seminar was working on Post-Modern and Deconstruction philosophy in a hope of understanding conflict around the world. By pure chance, I found this book in the New Books section of the college Library. It intrigued me enough to check it out and the next thing I know ... Post-Modernism and Deconstruction are exactly like comics. Holy smokes! I recommended it to my professor for next year's seminar. I don't think she saw it quite as serious as I did. Oh well.
