Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Very acerbic in tone, very tough-speaking protagonist. But also a very well-written book with an interesting and intricate plot.

Crochet Answer Book
by
Edie Eckman
Kimberly J.
, January 29, 2014
Very nice handy size to carry in your crochet bag, for answers to potential problems. Eckman has an excellent way of explaining common problems, how to avoid them, and how to fix them. Together with her experience in teaching, she is very competent at explaining and illustrating problems and how to solve them. If you can only carry one crochet book with you, this would be the one. Highly recommended.

The Tale of Hill Top Farm: A Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter Mystery: Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter 1
by
Susan Wittig Albert

Really a beautiful rendition of the historic times of Beatrix Potter. I think that Albert does a masterful job of showing us Beatrix, without trying to imitate her style. We see Beatrix Potter very much through the animals' viewpoints in the story, which is well plotted, well driven and just really interesting.

Mr & Mrs Prince How an Extraordinary Eighteenth Century Family Moved Out of Slavery & Into Legend
by

I'm really curious... how is it that the writer calls Mrs. Prince the first African American poet, when that honor has always been given to Phillis Wheatley? Learned that in my first American literature course, and if you google the phrase, lots of references come up to Phillis Wheatley, and none to Mrs. Prince. Phillis dates to Colonial times.

Sailing Grace A True Story of Death Life & the Sea
by
John Otterbacher

A remarkable story of a man who, after suffering a debilitating heart attack, choses to seize life & go forward, despite his fears of what may happen next. I loved this story because of the true heartness of the man telling it, and his perspective on life & sailing.

One Thousand Tracings Healing the Wounds of World War II

Just a simply wonderful book. The blend of illustration with story is remarkable, the writing is beautiful, and the book evokes strong emotions generated by the love, kindness, and the history behind the story. In many ways, the story is one of how small actions taken by just 'regular people' can benefit so many others, and lessen the horrific effects of war & its aftermath. The history contained in the story is well put together & well conveyed.

Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
by
Kate DiCamillo
Kimberly J.
, April 15, 2006
I'd like to put all the best adjectives on this review including fabulous, special, great, but that wouldn't tell anyone anything about the book, right? So I'll just say that someone compared the book to Velveteen Rabbit & they're absolutely correct, but Kate DiCamillo does a beautiful job of writing a very different book. Edward Tulane is such a real character with quirks, flaws, but yet you find yourself falling in love with him yourself. It is a good book & one I think I'll keep forever.
