Children & Fire
by

Another brilliant novel by Ursula Hegi, bringing to life Germany during the thirties. Hitler is ascending to power and with that in the background, everyone is affected. The children in the class of the teacher protagonist believe that Hitler loves them more in fact than their own parents do. The reader sees how propaganda and the desire not to make waves contribute to the rise. A truly important book, beautifully told.

Drop of the Hard Stuff
by
Lawrence Block

, May 30, 2011
Over his long career Lawrence Block has won every award available to mystery writers. It is then high praise indeed to say the latest novel, A Drop of the Hard Stuff, ranks among the best. Matt Scudder, the protagonist of Block's best series, returns in an investigation of why Jack Ellery is killed in an attempt to atone for past sins. The story is fascinating, with its many insights into alcoholism and AA, the prose sparkling. All fans of the genre will be amply rewarded.

For anyone who reads fiction and is interested in how a short story master went about structuring his story, this book is a must. Written with wit, it provides much insight into the process.

An outstanding novel by a master. A layered, beautifully structured masterpiece.
